BEADLE RETURNS FOR ANOTHER YEAR The congregation of the High lands Methodist church and the rest of the community are gratified at the return of the pastor, the Rev. W. F. Beadle, for another year. ( Mr. Beadle has been per manently transferred to this con ference from the Louisiana confer ence. In addition to his present charges, Mr. Beadle will serve the churchs at Norton and C-lcnvillc. Both Mr. and Mrs. Beadle are well liked in Highlands and all are glad to welcome them back again. - FIRE DESTROYS INTERIOR OF ELROD HOUSE Fire destroyed the interior of the house belonging to Dewey Elrod on Saturday afternoon. The" fire de partment responded to an alarm at about 4 o'clock. The blaze broke out in a room on' the second floor and was caused 'by a defective fh'e. The family was able to save cloth ing and . some of the household furnishings. A small amount oh in surance was carried on the house and several" donations have been made to Mr. Elrod. At present. the lannly is living on the Guttwals place. . LARGE CROWD ATTENDS CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR MEETING . A large crowd attended the meet ing of the Christian Endeavor at the Presbyterian church on fast Sunday evening. Among other reso lutions' it was decided that the group be reorganized according to the latest plans of the young peo ple of the Synod. These elections will take place next Sunday eve ning. Hitherto this group has been composed of young people of all denominations who have worked together under the name of a Young People's League. The ac tion taken last Sunday makes it a distintcly Presbyterian group. On Monday a pick-up team from the Christian Endeavor met the high school basket-ball team on the school court. The final score was 44-20, the victory going to titc Christian Endeavor. SCHOOL NEWS Three replies have been received from letters mailed by the school pupils during Air Mail Week.-The first grade wrote to Governor Hoey and in reply received an, excellent picture of himself autographed "Sincerely yours, Clyde R. Hoey, Governor." Gov. Hoey also wrote to the class. The fifth grade wrote to the chamber of commerce at Monti eal, Canada, requesting literature and information about Montreal, which was received here during last week. . The sixth grade sent a letter ad dressed to themselves to Kitty Hawk with the request that it be postmarked and returned to ' them. It was received here a few days after being mailed. The seventh grade wrote Jo President Roosevelt, but as yet" no reply has been received. Twelve new seats have been in stated in the seventh grade room and are a( great improvement over the old equipment. The tables have been newly painted, giving the room a cleaner and brighter ap pearance. New work books in Lan guage, History, and .'Arithmetic are being used by the seventh grade ana are appreciated by the pupils. One seventh grader Wrote "Our work books prepare us for higher work and give us exact facts aOout important things. They also direct our study, save paper, and 'cost little." The class has sold $16 worth of subscriptions to the "Farm Life Magazine" and will receive as a prize a fine volley ball, in addition to individual prizes given for sell ing a dollar's, worth of subscrip tions. On October 15 the seventh grad ers listened with benefit and en joyment to the radio program of music appreciation by Walter Dam rosch. . Mrs. Roger Smith has given to the seventh grade 28 books of' fic tion , including the following: .A Man For The Age, Ann of Ave, The Works of Edgar Allan Poe, Heart of the Rose, , Angeline at the Seel Bach, Angeline Doin' So ciety, Angeline Steppin' Out, Dawgs, Lions, Story of Young Ben jamin Franklin, To-day's Children, A Laugh a Day Keeps The Doctor Away, The Story of Young George I Washington, The Virginian, Recol lections and Letters of Robert E. Lee, The Crucible, The Fotygraph Album, Clever County, The North America Alamanac, 1931, Lind bergh's, The Midlander, My Favor ite Story, We Must March, Poetry of War, Tom Sawyer, The Rebel Rider, Little Women, The Great Southwest. Mrs. Smith also gave the class 40 recent magazines, and Mrs. Frank Bloxham gives -"Life" each week. Something which the students of the seventh grade may do, but which is not compulsory, is the composition of original poetry.
