IS, 1957 Blister Rust Campaign Making Progress With the, close of the fall season the white pine blister rust control project is concentrating on map ping white pine stands in Macon county and will continue this work during the winter months until all white pine in the county will have been mapped. To date 16,000 acres of pine have been mapped and some 30,000 acres of land have been cleared of cur rant and gooseberry bushes to protect this pine. All currant and gooseberry bushes within 1,000 feet of any white pine are potential carriers of the pine blister rust which is now bordering on this state. In order to prevent the disease from damaging North Carolina's white pines it is neces sary to locate and destroy the dis ease carriers. The town of Highlands was worked two weeks ago and an exhibit illustrat ing blister rust control was shown in the town hall. The blister rust control exhibit is available to schools and educa tional programs if those interested will write to H. A. Whitman, Jr.. blister rust control agent, at 604 County Building, in Asheville. Mr. Whitman is in charge of the pro ject now , operating in Macon county. An office space has been set up in the courthouse in Fjanklin for this county and the assistance of NYA will be used from time to time in keeping field reports. All persons cooperating with the blister rust control program are urged to contact the agent in the Franklin office or to write direct to the Asheville office for further information. In the olden days, she went on, baking was a ritual during the Thanksgiving - Christmas season and today many a good housewife still feels the urge to bake at this time.
