THURSDAY, NOV. 25, 1937 THE FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE. HIGHLANDS MACON IAN PAGE FIVE Filth and Exposure Lead to Swine TliuV Filthy pens .and exposure in bad weather lead the way to swine in fluenza that takes a heavy toll of the baby pig crop every year. Dr. C. D. Grinnells, veterinarian at the N. C. agricultural experi ment station, said' this disease can be controlled by giving swine the right kind of care in fall and winter. Provide the' pigs with clean, -well-bedded pens ; protect them from undue" exposure and drafts in rough, cold weather; and isolate newly purchased" hogs for at least 30 .Jays to see whether they are in fected , with disease. Swine "flue" resembles hog chol era, and this complicates the . trouble.- When pigs are weakened by one, they can easily contract the other. The similarity of the two diseases also makes it difficult to tell whether to treat the animals for "flu" or for cholera, Dr. Grinnells continued. Sanitation and vaccination will prevent cholera. Sanitation and protection from exposure will pre vent "fin " If the Dies catch the "flu." they should be placed in , e . i : : I clean, warm pens ana ieu sparing ly an easily digested ration. Symptoms of "flu" .and of cholera are a tendency for the animals to oile ud. or to appear unduly weak or loggy. These symptoms may be caused by lung or intestinal worms also. When these symptoms are dis covered, the safest thing is to call in a veterinarian who can diagnose the trouble correctly and prescribe the right treatment, Dr. Grinnells states. Home Beautification Contest For 4-H Clubs A 4-H home beautification con test for 1938 has been announced by L. R. Harrill, 4-H club leader at State college. Although sponsored by 4-H clubs, he said, the contest will be open to all farm boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 20. "I would like to see every club member enter this contest," he added, ."not just for the sake of the contest, but for what they can do to make their homes more at tractive. "Just think what North Caro lina's 4-H club members could do 'to make this a more beautiful state." As a special inducement in the nation-wide contest, Mrs. Charles R. Walgreen, of Chicago, offers a gold medal to the winner in each county, and a 17-jewel gold watch to the state winner. A trip to the National 4-H Club congress in , Chicago a year from now will be awarded the four sec tional winners, and the national winner will receive a $300 college scholarship. Aerial Preacher Spreads Gospel From Sky "Sky pilot," a term sometimes used flippantly to describe a minister, is employed in a literal and serious sense when Rev. Al Waer of Whittier, Calif., ;takes to the air to preach the Four Square Gospel to congrega tions 1,500 feet beneath him. Waer preaches to throngs on the earth through a loud speaker system installed In the plane. He will also use the plane for gospel sky writing. eating fish that was not strictly fresh happened also to drink milk at the same meal. No facts of " food chemistry or physiology substantiate this old belief he went on. Experience of years disproves it. . Other people are afraid to drink milk and eat acid fruits at the same meal. They say that acid fruits will curdle the v milk in the stomach. As a matter of fact, the first thing the stomach does to milk is to curdle it so it can be digested. And curds formed from fruit acids are finer and easier to digest than those, formed by stomach gastric juices alone. , Another oft-told admonition is that sipping milk slowly instead of drinking it naturally aids diges tion. Research studies have shown that when milk is sipped slowly, the curds formed are bigger and harder to digest than those formed when it is drunk rapidly.
