Care and Management
Of Baby Chicks
Now is the proper time to make
plans for what , is intended to be
doiib in poultry this year. Ihcre are
certain things that .should be done
before the chicks arrive.
K-stablish a supply of green feed
of either rye, wheat, oats, rape, or
a mixture -of these.
Build or repair' brooder house.
Every one who plans to raise any
quantity of baby chicks should have
a .brooder house. A good size for
the. brooder house is 12 ft. -by "14 ft.
'1 his size house will accommodate
tip to M) baby' chicks. The floor
should be of concrete or of double
wood. Besides raising baby chicks,
this house, is especially good for
curing sweet potatoes Which will
prevent so many of them from rot
ting. Plans for the brooder house
and for the brooder can be secur
ed from the county agent's office.
If you already have a brooder
house it should be repaired and
thoroughly cleaned. Sweep down the
ceiling and walls, scrape and sweep
the floor, tli en scrub the walls and
floor with hot water, which has a
13 ounce can of lye to 20 gallons
of water. Clean air equipment with
the same solution. After the house
is' dry cover the floor with dry

shavings or straw. Start the brood
er at least two days before' tne
chicks arrive so that you will know
how to regulate the heat and so
that the brooder house will be warm.
When the chicks arrive see that
fresh water with the chill off is
in the drinking founts. There
should be two half gallon drinking
founts for each 101) chicks. The
chicks are supposed to be well and
healthy, so keep 'medicine and dis
enfectants out of the water. Keep
a bucket full of water on top of
the brooder at all times. This will
add moisture to' the air. Keep a
good grade of starting mash in
.hoppers four inches high, six inches
wide, and five feet long, for each
100 chicks. Begin feeding starting
grain and green feed when chicks
are seven to 10 days old. Feed
starting mash until chicks are seven
weeks old, then, gradually change
to growing mash. Do not over heat
or chill. Practice rigid sanitation.
Wash drinking founts daily. Keep
dry litter in brooder house at all
times, change this litter every other
day. See that the house is, properly
ventilated but free from drafts.
A 'regular income can be secured
from poultry if properly handled.
Now is the time to get in touch
with" some reliable hatchery and
place your order for chicks so that
you can 'be assured of delivery
when you want them. Heavy breed
chicks should be delivered in March
and light breed chicks should be
delivered in April to make the best
layers-. For more detailed informa
tion, see your county or home agent.
