O'NEIL GIVES RADIO TALK FROM RALEIGH The following radio talk was re cently given by Mrs. T. J. O'Neil from Raleigh during the recent meeting of farm and home agents, The subject of the talk was, "How Macon County Women are Meet ing the Opportunity l'rovided by Tourist Trade:" Opportunity is at last knocking at the door of the mountain couu lies oi isoi tii Carolina, oppoi luni.y in the guise of tourists and in the form oi home demonstration cluus. How fortunate that the two -developed simultaneously ! Until a very few years ago, the mountain people were practically buried, especially during the winter. The last two years have brought forth graveled roads, scenic high Ways, national parks, picnic grounds, game reserves, fishing and hunting areas . and these material thing' have in their turn attracted tourists. "With the advent of more an i more tourists has come the oppor tunity for the people of the moun tain counties, who previously have had ho money crop, to realize an income from rooms, cabins, meals, J guide's, crafts, country hams, shuck ; mats, evergreens, "and other pro ducts of this section. Part of the' answer to this demand has been mot through : the work of home demonstration clubs. Realizing that home demonstra tion work, to be effective,- shoi id meet an urgent need, the women of the Macon County Council in ! planning the work for the past, two and next three years, very wisely i outlined a program which would enable the folks of this section to SORE THROAT KITH COLDS Given Fast Relief attract' tourists and supply the de mand ; of visitors to our . part of the state. The following objectives were set up : To beautify homes and gardens ; to improve living' con ditions and provide , wholesome, ap petizing food and comfortable liv ing quarters; through a curb mark et to '.supply the . demand for pro duce, country hams, . crafts and other mountain 'products; to ac quaint our people with the history and scenic beauties .of this section in order that they may have a common meeting ground on which to become acquainted with those who travel through our country. The following will show a very few ways in which the home dem onstration club program has done its part in meeting the demands of tourists. In one community on a highway, 15 homes have been paint ed inside and out during the past year, the .yards have been land scaped, water has been put in six of. these homes, new ' furniture and comfortable beds have been pur chased and the women are ready for tourists. Seven of these homes were filled during the last summer. Through the curb market, organiz- ized for about a year, the women have taken in over' $2,(XK). Next year 'we will have more hams, jel lies, crafts and other articles of in terest to tourists. The women of Highlands make enough through catering and renting rooms to live on during the rest of the year, the season being of three months dura tion. One woman - built an up-to-date Laundry. Guides have been trained through , 4-H clubs, caddies taught personality improvement. Mrs. Carl Slagleand the women who weave for her have supplemented their incomes through the sale of hand woven articles. Miss Annie Slagle took care of about IOC tourists during the last summer for periods varying fro four days to one month. Many others met or beat this record. These women are home demonstration club women: They are blossoming out and com ing into their own. Visit our moun tain counties. A ready welcome i awaits you.
