Lee Well and 1'unip Company, of Spartanburg, S. C, assures for the town an adequate supply of pure water for a long-time-to come probably 10 years. This will be most gratifying news to the citizens of the town, and to those who are accustomed to spend the summers here. ' The scarcity of water during the latter part of the summer last year made it necessary for the town authorities to place restrictions upon its use which were a serious inconvenience to many people, and it is good to know that those restrictions will not have to be enforced this year. ' One Way to Handle a Surplus rN January 17, 1938, every chain food store in the United States launched a concerted and vigor ous campaign to dispose of . a threatened surplus of dried beans of all varieties. Once more producers of farm commodities joined hands with thirty thou sand food stores in order to solve an agricultural problem. And it is gratifying to note that the prob lem was not solved by resorting to a program of scarcity. As in other similar and . highly, successful cam- paigns, which have included grapefruit, lamb, pears, " eggs, apples, walnuts, etc., this one was designed to come to the rescue of a . particular commodity in dire distress. In this instance it was the lowly dried bean. During the campaign every effort was made to stimulate the consumption of-dried beans; to assist growers in their acute marketing problems; to strengthen and stabilize the depressed bean market; to give consumers the benefit of the un usually good food values in dried beans at present low price levels, and the campaign was successful. It . is difficult to imagine a more constructive program, or one that contributes more substantially to the comfort and well-being of the country. The leaders in agriculture and retail merchandising, re sponsible for the inception of producer-consumer campaigns, are. entitled to the highest praise; they, have initiated a movement that goes far toward solving the problems of agriculture on an economic ally sound basis. Stalin had his army chiefs shot, Hitler kicked his bunch out of the front door, and it is now up to Mussolini to find an original way to dispose of the Italian brass hats who may be guilty of thinking. This being election year, congressmen want to relieve everybody. How about trying a little relief on the fellow who had begun to think he could make both ends meet, when somebody moved both of them. Talk about teamwork. Every time England be gins to get too inquisitive about Japan's outrages in China,. Mussolini sees to it that another British ship is sunk off the coast of Spain, thus transfer ring British interest to the Mediterranean. Prob ably he thinks that this continual jumping about will fatigue the indignation of the British lion. The murder of Dr. Charles H. Lee, rector of Christ Church at Frederica, Ga., was one of the most-brutal and most mysterious crimes of recent "ears. The aged rector was shot through the brain by an unknown assassin who stood near a closed window. Christ Church was founded at Fort Fred erica, on St. Simons Islands, shortly after the fort was established by General James Edward Ogle thorpe; and John Wesley," founder of Methodism, and his brother, Charles, were the first rectors. v-x m v -' U h ! The gentleman is former Solicitor General Stanley Reed, appointed by President Roosevelt to succeed retiring Justice George Sutherland on the Supreme court bench. NEW BEACH WEAK 6mttiit Vwwi'Wi'S ijMAi Aiii i inJ I Something new in beach wear is this imported bongay in which pret ty Miss Connie Keane is seen on Tahitia beach at Miami, Fla. The wide-brimmed hat is made of hand woven straw in two colors. Many innovations in beach costumes are being seen at this winter resort in the 1938 season. Warns Leaf Growers Of Tobacco Beetles The first step in controlling flea beetle attacks is the prevention of their entering tobacco plant beds, J, O, Rowell, extension entomolo gist at State college, is warning lea, growers, He pointed out that all plaAt bed sites should bt burned or steamec before any seed are sown. This will aid in destroying any insect, or eggs which might be in tht ground. . In building the toed, the side w.alh should be tightly itted at all joints and well banked with dirt on the outside. A cloth cover which has at least 25 strands per linear inch should be stretched over the bed so that there will be no opening between the cover and the top of the sidt walls. While flea beetle attacks may be prevalent throughout the plant bee period, the young plants are most' susceptible to injury during the first 10 days following sCed germi nation. For this reason, Rowell said, it is advisable not to remove the cover more often than is neces sary during this critical period. An opened bed may give the adult beetles access to the interior where they begin their egg laying. . , "Too much emphasis cannot be placed on the importance of build ing tight beds as an aid in reduc ing flea beetle injury," Rowell; de clared. O.ne per cent rotenone dust has been found the most efficient in secticide for destroying the beetles. This dust may' be applied with a rotary hand-operated duster or by a bellows-type hand duster at the rate of one-half pound to each 100 square yards of plant bed surface. State Board of Health Warns Against Marihuana RALEIGH, Feb. 9. A solemn .varning against "marihuana" is sounded by Mrs. J. Henry High smith, assistant director of health education, state board of health. As the result of a special study on the evils of the weed which, when smoked, makes perverts and demons out of its victims,. Mrs. Highsmith says : "Marihuana is a new world term for an old world drug whose an cient history is black with crime and insanity. It was introduced only a few years ago into the border country of the United States by Mexican laborers. Today it is known to have spread to every state in the Union, and the number of mari huana addicts. s now estimated to be more than 100,000, the majority of whom are of high school and college age. The AssajMin "Marihuana, or marijuana, is the Mexican .name for the dried flow ers and leaves of the commercial, hemp plant, cannabis sativa. In Asia the plant is known as can nabis indica, or Indian hemp, and the narcotic derived from it is call ed hashish. The English word 'as sassin' is derived from the Arabic 'hashishin', or 'hemp eaters', an oriental religious and military so ciety noted for its violence and crimes committed under the influ ence of hashish. Orientals'long ago learned that hashish . produced the roper- mental and emotional state for committing crimes of the most heinous nature. In Cigarette Form "Marihuana circulates in the United States usually in the form of cigarettes under a variety of .ocal names, such as reefers', gree fas, mutahs, muggles, miggles, love weed, giggle: weed, joy-smoke and the like. It is peddled out especially to high school boys and girls by agaibond dope peddlers. Victims Among Students , "In this country the effects of '.lie drug are obtained almost en tirely by smoking the dried leaves and flowers of the plant. It has been found being sold not only in high school and college communi ties, but across refreshment count ers, in second rate dance halls, low amusement places, barbecue stands and some filling, stations. Mari huana dens have been found in some of the larger cities, and many of these were visited by high school boys and girls in search of. a new sensation. Its Effects Vary "The effect of the marihuana drug differs with the individual. No one can predict what the reaction in any case will be. On the im mature brain of the young, it acts as an almost overpowering stimu lant. Its continued use undoubtedly results in general instability, men tal weakness and finally in insan ity. 'Floating' is the term given to marihuana intoxication. In this con dition the person's ego becomes greatly magnified, and nothing ap pears impossible. All sense of time, place, conscience or consequent is lost. Marihuana victims suffer hal lucinations which often take the form of a persecution complex, with violent murders, maybe of father, mother or best friends, as the result. What Experts ,Say "A. J. Anslinger, U. S. Com missioner of Narcotics, says : 'Mar ihuana is contributing to an alarm ing wave of sex crimes. How many murders, suicides, robberies, crim inal assaults, holdups, burglaries and maniacal insanity are caused each year by marihuana can only be conjectured. The sweeping march of its addiction has been so insidi ous" that it thrives in numerous communities and is only found out by the commitment of a heinous crime.' Move Tfcward Control "To bring the traffic in this drug under control, says Mr. Anslinger, means a job of unceasing watch fulness on the part of the police, parents, school officials, public health officials and all welfare workers. It means education through the schools, the home and the press. It mtans also cooperation on the part of all good citizens in secur ing the strict enforcement of state and federal narcotic laws. "Fortunately, North Carolina has a state law for the control of mar ihuana, but not until last summer when Congressman R. L. Dough ton introduced and secured the passage of a law by Congress did we have a federal law. One without the other was ineffective, while both, it is believed will be able to curb the traffic in the marihuana drug."
