Dr. Padgett
Delivers Address At P.-T.
A. Meeting Tuesday
The address of Dr. P. G. Padgett,
county health officer, delivered at
the regular meeting of the Parent
Teacher Association February 22,
was heard by a record attendance
of mothers and eachers. The pro
gram also included a special Wash
ington's Birthday ieature in speeches
delivered by Andrew Patton, (Jauue
Evans and Frank Leach, Jr., from
Mr. Overcash's class in the hijjh
school.
Dr. Padgett preceded his address
with a reference to the 41st anni
versary of the Parent-Teacher
organization which was celebrated
. last week, growing out or tnc
World Congress of Mothers, who
' made the move to enlist teachers
in the work of mothers in child
welfare.
Dr. Padgett's addr.ess will be
printed in the next issue of The
rrws with its valuable and timelv
instruction on the "Nourishment of
the School Child." Under-nourish-ment
with its attendant effects of
dullness, stooped .shoulders, poor
digestion and other physical handi
caps received special emphasis.
Valuable advice was given how
these my be overcome by the poor
est parents through knowledge of
a balanced diet. Milk as a neces
sary food for the growing child
was stressed, with a special plea
that parents give their children
milk to drink instead of selling all
they produce a prevalent custom
which amounts to starving one's
children. The necessity of well-balanced,
as well as hot school lunches,
was also urged. Dr. Padgett cited
the excellence of the Franklin
school lunches directed by Miss
Lthel Hurst as not only abundant
but well "balanced. V
Mrs. Wasilik, president, announc
ed that a prize of fifty cents would
be given , to the school room rep
resented by the highest attendance
of mothers at each meeting. The
