Macon County Council of Social Agencies TPHE Council of Social Agencies of Macon county organized last week made a promising begin ning in point' of-attendance and vital presentation of social and civic work being carried on by agen cies and organizations. We. venture to say that few citizens realize the value or the variety of these services, or their sig nificance for the future betterment of lives touched and taught. The value of any effort for helping one's fellownian is, in the last analysis, measured by the sincerity and fitness of the individual worker. So, any means,' like the council, just organized, to strengthen the workers through contact, coopera tion and a better understanding of the whole field of service, can react immeasurably for the good of all for helpers and helped and all citizens. Through such councils the standards .of social welfare in a community may not only be raised, but the entire citizenship can be educated in an understanding of the purposes of organized efforts of helpfulness. For never before in the history of any nation have so many agencies government, religious, fraternal and civic- operated for human betterment. A planned beneficence is as necessary as a plan ned economy; heart and head must work together toward better methods, higher characters and great er faith in the possible best of human beings. If one is bewildered by the very multiplicity of social agencies, or inclined to a pessimistic acceptance, we suggest that a happier understanding may be reach ed by answering "yes" to the age-old question, "Am I my brother's keeper?" We venture to hope this association may be an active force for the enrichment of- life in many phases in our county. We Can Have Safety IXft'LL get highway safety when we want it ! That is the opinion of W. Earl Hall, presi dent of the Iowa State Safety Council. "When nine out of ten persons want safety, we'll be on our way to having safety," says Mr. Hall. "It will work out this way : . ' . "The nine will turn to the educator, the engineer and the enforcer the personalities behind the three E's of safety and say this: 'We want this problem" solved. We're willing to pay the price and we're willing to cooperate in the fullest measure.'" We have all the essentials of safety at hand. Our road builders have made remarkable strides in giv ing us streets .and highways designed to eliminate as many of the hazards of driving as possible. Our automobile makers worked miracles in improving lights, brakes and other mechanical safety factors. Over a long period of time, our state traffic codes and standards of law enforcement have tended to steadily improve, even though much remains to be done. Where, then, is the fault? Why did- last year's automobile death toll reach an all-time high in ex cess of 4(),()(X)? The answer is plain. We talk about safety but a great many of us aren't willing to do the things that create safety. It's easy to pan the other fellow and at the same. time to excuse worse faults in ourselves. We condemn recklessness and then go out and drive at high speeds. We argue convincingly that courtesy in driving is vital and then hog the right-of-way. We have nothing but condemnation for the drunken driver and then we go to a partyvdrink-all evening, and drive home. Yes, We can have safety when we really want it. It's squarely up to us all. S. L.
