Chapter of the United Daughters of Confederacy held their regular - monthly meet ing on Monday afternoon at the home of the president, Mrs. Carl S. Slagle, on Cartoogechaye, with 11 members and visitors present. The meeting was opened with the group singing "The Old North State," with Mrs. Henry W. Caue at' the piano, 'followed by- the usual ritualistic service. Mrs. Slagle presided over the uusiness session. The meeting was then turned over to Mrs. 11. E. Church, chairman of the program committee. The program included a solo, "Mighty Lak a Rose', and "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes," by 'Miss Dorothy Sloan, ac companied by. Mrs. Henry V. Caue at the piano. A piano solo, Swance River" by Mrs. Henry W. Cabe and a piano solo, "Dixie'' by Myra Slagle, daughter, of the hostess. .. Others taking part in the pro gram were: Mrs. J. V. Canty Johnson who. gave a devotional talk on "The Meaning of Easter," tracing the history of the great Christian festival - and its spiritual meaning -as .applied to problems of the world today. Mrs. H. E. Church gave the his tory of the grain reaper from the primitive knife blade to the- highly developed machines of today. The Press has received a card from J. D. Franks who, with his family have been spending some time in Tucson, Ariz., stating that they will, soon more further north for a short stay and then expect to come back to Franklin. Mrs.. T. H. Callahan' and chil dren, Betty and Hall, moved Sat urday to Bryson City to join Mr. Callahan, who recently accepted a position there with the J. H. Cof fee mercantile establishment. William W. Sloan, who is work ing in Atlanta, spent the past week end here "visiting at the home of his brother, F. S. Sloan and. Mrs. Sloan, at their home in East Franklin. Winners Announced In Legion Essay Contest In the American Legion essay contest on the subject, "The' Ad vantages of American Citizenship,'' which closed on April 5, the fol lowing were winners in Macon county : .'' The essays were typewritten and not signed, according to the rules of the statewide contest.. Conley has been confined to his room for the past week suf fering from influenza. Beshears and Mr. and Mrs.. Harry S. Higgins. Mrs. Fred Siler returned to her home here Sunday from New York City, where, she spent the past twro months -with her daughters. En route home Mrs. 'Siler stopped, at Lake Junaluska for a visit with her BURRELL MOTOR history in the Franklin high school, had charge of the contest here, and Mrs. Kate M. Rhinehart and F. C. Hentz were in charge in Highlands. All but one of the pup ils in the Highlands high school submit ted essays, and more than a hundred were submitted by pupils of the Franklin school. The Macon county posl of the American Legion will give prizes of $3, $2 and $1 for the winners. The state prizes are $25, $1,5 and $10 respectively for the three best essays submitted in the state con test. A board of judges to be se lected by State Superintendent of Education Clyde A.
