An Easter Message
By THE REV. FRANK BLOXHAM
Rector of St. Agnes Episcopal Church, Franklin, and the Church
of the Incarnation, Highlands
"1XHHN the people of Verona passed Dante on
the streets they looked, upon his austere grav
ity and whispered, "There is the man who hath
seen hell."
When men beheld the seamed and weary face of
Jesus struggling up the hill beneath the Cross, when
they heard the thud of the mallet and finally the
cruel jar of the wooden beam as it was fitted into
the hole in the rock, as they saw that august and
yet most beneficent face borne upvvard toward the
sky, as they heard the cry from the parched lips,
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they
a. .ft. it ;" 'i i-'.i.ii i a . 1 ti
uo ;,iney aouuuess saiu one 10 anoiner, mere is
a man that; hath seen hell." But as He walked with
friends on the road to Emmaus and. later permitted
Thomas to feel His hands and feet to see that it was
indeed He, they, doubtless, whispered, "Here is a
'man' that hath seen hell, but is alive again by the
power and authority of Almighty God." .
The victory of the Cross reaches far and wide,
carrying with it the message of pardon and peace.

ing all round us. And this is more than a parable,
for the work of Redemption, so we are taught, be
longs not only to man, but also to the environment
in which he is placed. Nature .itself feels and re
joices in the achievement of Easter. Our own ex
perience shows that it is through effort, painful ef
fort, and through suffering that anything worth
having is commonly won. Nothing lives but sacri
fice. It is out of the night that the day dawns. At
Easter we look up to the' Master, victorious through
suffering. Here we find a living hope. Its springtide
bloom will never fade.
The Resurrection of Christ was the revelation of
a new world of spiritual, values and possibilities. It
brought confirmation to many ..of man's dreams and
hopes about the future, and made human life a
larger and nobler thing. But it did more ; in reveal
ing this new spiritual world it showed how the in
dividual could be made fit to be a member of it.
The man must be made new if he is tolive in a new
world of richer spiritual values. The newness can
come to him through the power of the Risen Christ.
Easter reveals a victorious Savi6r Who is a source
of life. What it has to say to us does not merely
relate to a future time when we shall enjoy immor
tality and the bliss of Heaven; it relates far more
to the present, because it tells of supernatural power
available here and now for the purifying and ennobl
ing of earthly life. "If ye then Were risen together
with Christ, seek the things that are above, v where
Chnst is"; those words have no meaning unless a
risen life of higher quality is here and now possible
for men ; unless they can begin to have within them
selves that eternal life which is'Christ's gift and con
tains within itself the promise of its own con
tinuance. Christianity is no cult of death. Good Friday is
not its limit nor ts upshot. We are to be incor
porated with One who is living. The inauguration
of a new world in which we ourselves are to have
a new life. Easter means more than fine services,
new clothes and a joyous springtime. It comes to
remind us all that we can each share in that Resur
rection Life of Him Who died to show men how to
live, and lives to show men how to make a success
of life and to give them power to attain to the new
spiritual values and possibilities of life itself.

Well equipped, well-drilled, these steel-helmeted Polish troops were photographed at Bydyosox recently
they marched past their commander in chief, General Smigly-Rydi. Soon afterward they were rushed to the
Lithuanian border to enforce a Polish ultimatum. When Lithuania capitulated the world breathed easier as
a threat of war was removed.

" Macon a Law Abiding County
TTHE April term of Macon county superior court,
" which is due to convene next Monday, promises
to be the shortest the county has ever had. There
are only a few misdemeanor cases on. the criminal
docket and the civil calendar contains no cases of
major importance.
Court weeks in Macon in recent years seem only
to be necessary because the law requires that court
be held on certain specified dates.
There may be some who do not comprehend the
meaning of the constantly dwindling court calendars
in Macon county, but to those who see things as
thev are, it means much. '
It means that we have a county filled with law
afiiding, peaceful people, who shun litigation and de
sire to live in peace with their neighbors people
who recognize the fact that no man or combination
of men can afford to go contrary to the law.
In propQrtion to size and population, Macon
county stands first today in the state and prob
ably in the whole United' States as a peaceful, law-
' abiding county. , r . ,
It means a lot to those of us who live, nere and
it will mean a lot to those who intend to visit us
during the coming Summer season.
Muse's Corner
There seems to have been some
controversy in the town of High
lands in regard to the cutting down
of a large oak tree which stood in
the center of the town, and one of
the citizens deals with the matter
poetically, as follows:
THE OLD OAK TREE
Was it by the will of the people
the tree was cut down?
The tree that' stood in the center
of town.
Or was it by the will of a chosen
' few '
Who were chosen the will of the
people to do?
Alas ! the "Old" Oak" is gone, '
There's nothing left that we can do.
And yet I know there lingers on
Memories for each of you.
So let's forget how it felt
To see the "Old Oak" down,
If it has really dealt
Improvements hoped for by the
town.
