The policy of The Franklin Press in the matter of county primaries has been to accompany all an nouncements with front page sketches of the can didates. We believe that in the matter of local politics a newspaper can best serve the people, first, by giv ing information and news; then, editorially, by standing for t,he principles of honest government by which candidates for office should be guided in seeking to represent and serve the people. The attitude of this newspaper to elections is, "Let the best man win." We believe that political personalities expressed in a newspaper that may in jure one candidate in the interest of another serve no good end. But this does not mean that The Franklin Press has no convictions as to issues involved in this cam paign, or that we are sitting on the fence watching the fight with no Interest in the' results. " There arc matters vital to the people's welfare involved in the coming primary that have no busi ness there. The people of Macon county have shown patience in directions where patience has ceased to be a virtue. We hone that all p-ood citizens will nidi together to insure a better future for the coming generation in Macon county; that more and more public ser vants will be held strictly accountable to render honest and whole-hearted service without thought of private gain and to give value received as they would have to do if they worked for a private corporation. Public office is a public trust. It is hoped that the good people of Macon county are alive to cer tain undemocratic practices that have grown up in the management of their affairs and that menace the rights of young and old. Political trading for selfish interest is a doubtful advantage taken of the people. "You can fool all of the people some of the time," etc. But eternal vigilance on the part of the people is the price of good government. If we wish to enjoy all the rights to which we are entitled under a free government, we should "look well to the ways of our household." Men should re ceivc public office whose records of ability and sob riety prove their fitness to safeguard the interests of all, fairly and honestly. The Press offers the use of its columns to candi dates who wish to state their platforms and ideals of service. No Absentee Ballots In Primary THE action of the candidates for county offices in Macon county in signing an agreement to bar the use of absentee ballots An the Democratic primary on June 4, will meet with commendation e n .l.- x irom an voters wno iavur mc lair aim .ii.ee e-xpics sion of the will of-fhe people at the polls. The absentee ballot has for years been a source of complaint and has been the cause of many charges of crookedness and corruption, and no doubt many of these charges were true. As to whether absentee ballots have been fraudu lently used in Macon county in past elections, as many charge, we are not prepared to say, but if they are barred in the coming primary there will certainly be a great saving in election expense and a more satisfied feeling when the election is over, 132 PROMOTED TO HIGHSCHOOL (Continued from Page One) Euirnin gtown Christine Huggins, Mary Raby, Edgar Welch. Arrowood Pools Get 120,000 Brook Trout A consignment of 120,000 brook trout has been received by the Nantahala national forest for rear ing iri the pools at Arrowood Glade These fish were hatched in the federal fish hatchery at Wytheville, Va., and will be held in the rear ing pools until this fall. It has been found that fish which are held in rearing pools for a number of months, with proper care and lood, grow very,. rapidly and when planted iin the streams are better able to care for themselves. The average length of the fish when received is approximately one inch and when released at the end of six months a large percentage of them will be more than six inches in length. It is anticipated that fish rearing this year will be highly successful and that this fall a large number of legal sized fish will be planted in the streams of the forest to help make the fisherman's dream a reality.
