Funeral Held At Bethel
M. E. Church Saturday
Afternoon
Mrs. Hermon D. Brendle, 8,
died at her home in East Franklin
at 1:30 o'clock last Friday after
noon after an illness of several
months. She had high blood pres
sure and recently suffered three
strokes. .
Mrs. Brendle was a member of
the Bethel Methodist church. Be
, fore her marriage, she was Miss
Carrie Virginia Gibbs, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Gibbs.
Funeral services were held at the
Bethel Methodist church Saturday
afternoon at 4 o'clock, with the
Rev. H. S. Williams -officiating.,
Pallbearers were Wayne Mc
Cracken, Dwight Wilson, Lee Poin
dexter, Kay Johnson, Charles Lewis
Brendle, and Alex Deal.
Surviving are her husband, four
daughters, Mrs. Reinard Harkana,
of Raleigh; Mrs. B. E. Wilson, Mrs.
J. P. Norton, and Miss Effie
Brendle, all of Franklin ; three
sons, Charles J. Brendle, of Speed
well ; J. W. , Brendle, of Hopewell,
" Va. ; and' H. G. Brendle, of Frank
lin ; 12 grandchildren ; and two sis
ters, Mrs. Mary Saunders, of
Richmond, Va., and Mrs. John
Brendle, of Watauga.
Azaleas On Wayah
In Full Bloom
Visitors to the John Byrne Me
morial Tower on' top of Wayah
bald in the Nantahala national for
est during the next two weeks will
find the vast azalea beds on top
of this mountain in full bloom.
The flame azalea along the for
est service road "are now in bloom
from : Arrowood Glade to Wayah
gap. Several varieties of ' azalea
ranging from the fragrant white to
the common flame and including a
rare, fragrant scarlet, are to be
found in the colorful mass of
shrubbery covering this mountain
peak.
The fragrant white azalea which
forms a mass around the new 53
foot Byrne tower is the last to
bloom and usually is at its peak
about the third and fourth weeks
in June.
An exceptional view of the Blue
Ridge, Nantahala and Great Smoky
mountains may be enjoyed from the
rustic stone tower. From the bal
cony which encircles the tower 30
feet above the ground the full dis
play of azalea and laurel unfolds
and Wends with the timbered slopes
in the distance.
Wayah bald is reached from U.
S. 64 six miles west of Franklin
via the scenic Nantahala road, a
forest service road directly to the
top of the 5300-foot mountain.

Coming To Franklin
Baxter's Comedians coming to
Franklin next Monday, 'June U
will present plays and vaudeville.
They will present plays of the type
of "Rebecca of Sunny brook Farm"
and 'Trail of the Lonesome Pine."
The comedian; Uncle "Billy" Bough
ton, 75 years of age, , is the oldest
comedian appearing with any show
today. Mr. Baxter, manager of the
show, was formerly with Reno's
Show.

Trail Club To
Arrive Here Sunday
The Atlanta unit 'of the Appa
lachian Trail club, under the direc
tion of Wm. Whitaker, will arrive
in Franklin on Saturday afternoon
and, will leave early Sunday morn
ing for a hike. Going by motor as
far as Wallace Gap, the party will
hike to Wayah clfest and go in
cars to the top of Wayah moun
tain. They will end the day's out
ing with a swim in Arrowood
park.
About 40 are expected, and will
have headquarters at Trimont Inn.
Revival Services To
Begin At Iotla
A series of revival services will
begin at the- lotla Baptist church
on Sunday, June 19, at 11 o'clock,
announced the Rev. R. F. May
berry, pastor.
The Rev. J. C. Pipes, of Waynes:
ville, will be in charge of the
preaching. The public is cordially
invited to attend these servces.

School June 19

house near Stiles postoffice, on
June 19, beginning at 1 p. m it

ARNOLD WIN
Frank Murray Elected At
Chairman Of Board;
Weaver Elected
The Democrats of Macon county
rolled up the largest vote ever
polled in a primary election in
this county last Saturday, and
nominated George . B. Patton for
representative, Lester L. Arnold for
register of deeds, Frank I. Murray '.
for chairman of the county board,
and gave Zebulon Weaver a ma
jority of 30 over R. L. Whitmire
for congress. Weaver's majority in
the district was more than 15,000.
Notwithstanding the large crowd
and heavy vote, the election was
quiet and orderly, and no trouble
was reported from any of the pre
cincts. George B. Patton won from R.
A. Patton for representative by a
majority of 920, and Lester Arnold
defeated George R. Pattillo for reg
ister of deeds by 2002 to 983, a
majority of 1019.
For state senator Guy L. Houk
received a majority in the county
of 793 over both opponents. Mor
phew and Bennett, however, receiv
ed more votes in the district, with
Morphew leading, though he did
not receive a majority; and Ben- .
nett has the right to demand a
second primary, but this is thought
unlikely.
Jones CanrifM County
In the race for solicitor Baxter
Q Jones, of Bryson Gty, carried
the county over John M. Queen,
incumbent, by. 170Q, to ,1238, a ma
jority of 462. Queen carried Jack
son, Haywood, Cherokee, Graham
and Clay counties, while Jones car
ried Macon and Swain. Queen was
renominated by a majority of more
than 4000.
Frank I. Murray led the ticket
for chairman of the county board,
leading E. B. Byrd next highest,
by f)7 votes. C. L. Blaine $nd C
A. Bryson were nominated by safe
majorities as commissioners over
Mann B. Norton and R. D. Brendle.
Renolds Gta Great Majority
Senator Robert R. Reynolds left
his opponent, Frank Hancock, far
behind in the Macon county voting,
receiving 2316 to 627 for Hancock.
Senator Reynolds also swept the
state, his majority being more than
90,000.
Two Republican candidates for
the state senate, W. W. Jenkins
and Frank W. Swan, were voted
on in i Macon county, but the elec- .
tion was of small interest. Jenkins
receiving 19 votes and Swan 29 in
the entire county.
The vote polled by the Demo
crats Saturday totaled about 3000
which was more than 500 greater
than that of two years ago.
Mrs. Martha Jacobs
Passes Sunday
Mrs. Martha Boston Jacobs. 50,
wife of George Jacobs, of Franklin
Route 3, died at her home Sunday
afternoon at 2 o'clock, after a short
illness with heart ailments.
Funeral services were held at the
home at 2:30 Monday afternoon,
with the Rev. J. A. Flanagan, pas
tor of the Franklin Presbyterian
church, in charge of the services.
Interment was in the Franklin cem
etery. .
Mrs. Jacobs was a faithful, con
secrated member of the Franklin
Presbyterian church.
Surviving are her husband, George
Jacobs ; a daughter, Mrs. Reba
Stanfield; a grandson, Bobby Stan
field; her mother, Mrs. Mack Bos
ton; a sister, Mrs. Bob Anderson,
and two brothers, Will and Gene
Boston, all of Franklin.
