Beauticians Must Take Washerman Test RALEIGH, July C All new ap plicants for licenses to work .as beauticians wlio file for the exami nation to be held in October, this year, must present certificatesshow ing they have taken the Wasser man blood test, it was announced following a conference between rep resentatives of the North Carolina board of cosmetic art examiners and officials of the state board ot health, which, under the law, must approve , rules of sanitation and health in beauty shops and among the personnel. -;' Where such tests are positive, the board of examiners may, in its dis cretion, before issuing a license to practice cosmetic arts, give special consideration to the applicant by requiring treatment until they 'be come . non-infectious and, finally, cured. The board also has the right to require individuals to have blood tests made between examina tions, whenever! it is deemed expe dient for the protection of the pub lic and the information of the beau tician. It was also announced that be fore any worker can have their license renewed on June 30, 1939, they must take the test, thus mak ing the rule, which will be strictly enforced, applicable to those al ready engaged in work, as well as those who in the future make, ap plication for licenses. The person nel of beauty shops now doing busi ness in North Carolina numbers approximately 5,000. The purpose of the Wassermann test requirement is not only to pro tect the public 'but also for the protection of the workers, as well, it wns explained following the con ference. This forward attitude on the part of the board of cosmetic arts examiners is in line, with the program for the control of venereal diseases being conducted by the state board of health. The present board members are: Mrs. Annie L. Williamson, of Fay- etteville, chairman; Mrs. Gertrude Hutchinson, of Durham, secretary, and Mrs. Ethel Sinclair, of Hickory. Employers Should Learn Numbers of Employees Macon county employers hiring workers, now, because of seasonal business should learn the account number of each new employee and enter it in permanent records. New workers without account numbers should be referred by employers to the Asheville Social Security Board office, where numbers will be as signed them. This reminder, which comes today from the Social Se curity Board, is directed especially toward employers who, during the summer months, take on extra em ployees at hotels, tourist homes, and camps, or in such industries as ice cream, canning, lumber mill work, cement, automobile tires, and laundry. . Attention is called to the fact that quarterly wage reports are submitted by employers to the Bu reau of Internal Revenue for all employees whose wages are for em ployment covered by Title VIII of the Social Security Act. The amount of taxable wages paid to tempo rary and part-time employees as well as to permanent workers must be reported, along with the name and account number of each em ployee. The. employer's report of wages paid to an employee must include, in addition to wages in cash, the fair cash value of any other form of pay, such as goods, meals, or lodging. Employers who are opening their businesses for the first time since the federal old-age insurance pro gram went into effect on January 1, 1937, should make application at ctfice for an employer's identifica tion number at the nearest social security board office. What is meant by calcium phosphorus ratio and what is this ratio for poultry ? A. This is the relative proportion of calcium and phosphorus in the poultry diet and the proper ratio is essential for bone development, egg shell, formation, and other body activities. If these minerals are not present in the proper pro portions, conditions such as slipped tendons may take place. In grow ing chicks the per cent of calcium and phosphorus in the feed should be 2.1 and 0.7 and for laying stock the percentage shoufd be 1.6 of calcium and 1.0 of phosphorus. Q. How do I 'make Bordeaux mixture for spraying my apple, trees ? A. Three, pounds of bluestone should be dissolved in a wooden container for about 12 hours. This solution is then added to about 40 gallons of water and " thoroughly mixed with four pounds of lime in the form of a paste. Enough water is then added to make 50 gallons of the solution. This is the stan dard 3-4-50 Bordeaux mixture. This solution is used to control coddling moth, bitter rot, and fruit spot on apples. For late fruit, one pound of arsenate of lead should be added.
