Commercial Hatcheries Will Need Many Eggs This Winter RALEIGH, Aug. 24. H. S. Wil fong, N. C. Department of Agricul ture senior poultry specialist, fore casts a heavy demand for federal state approved, blood-tested hens to supply adequate hatching eggs for commercial hatcheries this winter and spring. "Well over two million eggs can be set by the 91 approved hatch eries now operating in North Caro lina, and it will take approximately 300,000 breeding-hens to supply hatching eggs for me hatchery men," he said. - "It is. unfortunate that the state produces only 35 per cent of the eggs consumed, but it is even more unfortunate that Tar Heel hatch erymen do not have sufficient blood tested breeding stock to maintain the poultry population on our farms, that is necessary to permit capac ity operation of our hatcheries." Wilfong said that 95 per cent of the hatcherymen in the state are now operating under the National Poultry Improvement Plan, a fed eral-state plan for the radication of pullorum disease and for the promotion of a more profitable poultry industry. The plan has been operated in North Carolina for the past two years under the direction of the State Department of Agriculture's veterinary division which annually makes more than 300,000 tests on breeding Jbirds for pullorum disease. Applications have been filed with the veterinary division for the test ing of approximately 250,000 hens for pullorum disease, a disease that is highly fatal to baby chicks. "This indicates a shortage of ap proximately 10 per cent in the num ber of breeding hens required to furnish eggs for the commercial hatcheries co-operating under the National Poultry lmproveme n t Plan," Wilfong .said. Premiums for the State Fair to be held at Raleigh, October 11-15, have been increased by $3,000, re ports Fair. Manager J. S. Dorton.
