C. Blair, ex tension agronomist at State college. The bacteria enable the leeume to grow and gather nitrogen out of the air, and when plowed under, the legume plants add huge quan tities of nitrogen and organic mat ter to the soil, he continued. Different bacteria are needed by different legume crops, and so it is important' to see that the proper innmlitinn U civen a field to be planted to these soil-building crops, which . include clovers. : lespedeza, yetch, Austrian winter peas, and If a field is to be sown to les pedeza, Blair explained, it may be inoculated with soil from a field where lespedeza has b.een growing recently. Don't attempt to get good results from soil where no lespe deza has been grown for two or three years If plenty of soil is available from nru-itlir fiplrl srattpr frnm 20 tn 50 bushels per acre over the field to be inoculated. Disk it in immedi ately and sow the legumes. If inoculated soil is scarce, treat the. seed with a thin syrup of cheap molasses or sugar and water. Enough seed to sow an acre may then be mixed with one to three bushels of soil and then sown im mediately. Take .up only the top eight inches or so . of bacteria, soil, and be careful not to get soil contain ing disease germs or noxious w.eed seeds. Commercial cultures of bac teria may be" obtained, Blair added, and it is much better ' to use these then undesirable soil.
