Next week, October 9-15, will be Fire Prevention Week throughout the United States by proclamation of the President, governors of the various states and mayors of towns and cities. - Fire Prevention Week is observ ed annually just before the cold weather sets in and fire hazards increase. People are urged to clean out all basements and attics, inspect and clean flues and heating equipment and clear away all inflammable trash and rubbish. Also to inspect wiring nd electrical appliances and have repairs made where necesSary. School principals and teachers are asked to see to it that heating ap paratus is safe and warn children about fire dangers. They . are also asked to "have regular fire drills in the various schools. Chief R. D. Ashe, of the Frank lin fire department will -post plac ards in public places' over the vtown calling attention to the importance of observing the safety measures cited above and urging the elimina tion of fire hazards here. Prof. Atkins Visits Rev. William Elmore Prof. Adolph Atkins was the guest of Rev. William Elmore dur ing last week-end. He was well pleased with the points of , interest visited and the scenic beauty of our Western counties. Prof. Atkins is a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers' college and the University of North Caro lina. He left .Tuesday for the north east where he expects to visit New York City and Niagara Falls! Beshears, on West Main street for the regular month ly meeting. There were 13 mem bers present. , . The meeting was presided over by Mrs. R. M. Rimmer, president. After the reports, the meeting was turned over . to Mrs. James L. Ave rill, chairman of the program com mittee. . "Mrs. W. C. Penn read a very interesting article on "Forcing Bulbs for Blooming .Indoors" and Mrs. Frank Higdon gave ' a talk from "Dahliadel Cultural Instruction" by Warren M. Maytrott, on the dig ging and storing of dahlia bulbs for the winter. The November meeting will be held with Mrs. John Archer and Mrs. Ben W. Woodruff, -at the home of the former. At the conclusion of the meeting, the hostess, assisted by Mrs. W. A. Rogers, served a sweet course. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hearne, of Salisbury, are spending several days in Franklin with Mrs, Hearne's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Bar nard. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Phillips and daughter, of Clinton, Tenn, spent the week-end with Mrs. Flumps mother, Mrs. A. S. Solesbee, at her home on Franklin Route 3. Doris Hall, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boise Hall, who has been confined to her bed with pneu monia for the past two weeks was reported to be improving Tuesday. Henley Moore, of Virginia Beach, Va., has returned to his home, after a visit with his father, C. -M; Moore, and brother, Gordon Moore and Mrs., Moore, at their home on West Boulevard. The Rev. Lester Sorrells, pastor of the Cartoogechaye Baptist church, was presented a gift of 15 quilts by the women in the " Cartooge chaye community. Mrs. C. S. Brown has returned to her home here, after a visit with her sister, Mrs. S. H. Brant ley, who is critically ill at her home in Tennille, Ga. . ; Robert L. Fred Ramey, of Tellico Plains, Tenn., has been spending a few days in Franklin on business. Births Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Womack announce the birth of a daughter, Martha Ellen, at Angel hospital on Monday afternoon, October 3, Both Mrs. Womack and young daughter are reported to be get ting along nicely. ' Born to Mr. and Mrs. James Erwin, a son, James Albert, Jr., on Wednesday, September 26, at their home in Winston-Salem.
