.In ta simple ceremony at high
noon on Saturday, October 15, at
Mt. Zion Methodist church on Car
toogechaye, Miss Mary Louise
Slagle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Carl S! Slagle, became the bride of
llet Black Southerland, of Winston
Salem. The church was decorated with
evergreens forming a background
for the white candles and pink and
white cosmos.
The nuptial music was played by
Mrs. Harry Higgins. Mrs. Frank
Bloxham sang "At Dawning" and
"OPromis Me." Richard Slagle,
cousin of the bride, accompanied by
Mrs, Ben Woodruff, sang "I Love
You Truly." The bridal party en
tered to the strains of "Lohengrin"
by Wagner, and during ihe cere
mony Shubert's "Serenade" was
played .softly. Mendelssohn's wed
ding, March was used for the re
cessional. ; v
Miss Myra Slagle, sister of the
bride, and Miss Nina Ra,e Waldroop
lighted the candles. The ceremony
. was preformed by Rev. . S. R.
Crockett.
The bride was escorted .by her
father, , who ..gave bef . la iiiarriage.
She. wore a teal ,blue dress with
black accessories, and a shoulder
corsage of talisman roses And
baby's breath.
. Miss Virginai Slagle, cousin of
the bride, was maid of honor. Her
dre&s was wine with black acces;
sories and her corsage was of
cream roses.
James Southerland, brother of the
bridegroom, of Wallace, N. C, was
best man. The ushers were C. S.
Slagle,, Jr., Charles Slagle, Mack
Slagle tand George Patton.
Following the ceremony a wed
ding breakfast was held at the
home of the bride's parents. The
guest list included a few close
friends, relatives, and out-of-town
guests. . '
After the breakfast Mr. nd Mrs.
Southard left for a short wedding
trip. They will be at home in
Winston-Salem after October 20. .
Among the out-of-town guests
present for the wedding were Mrs.
D. N. Wells, mother of the bride
groom, and Mr. Wells; Mr. James
Southerland, brother, and Miss Lucy
Catherine Southerland, sister of the
bridegroom, of Wallace; Mrs. Clar

Mrs. S. M. Bates and Thomas
Long, of Harrington, Wash., " and

Wash., were guests of. Mrs. S. E.
Penland and Grace Penland one day
last week at their homi on Palmer
street.
Bryan McClure and sister, Miss
Susan McClure, of Franklin Route
2, have gone to Lyman, Wash., for
a visit with relatives and friends.
Mrs. W. B. McGuire and daugh
ter, Miss Elizabeth McGuire, have
been spending several days with
their daughter and .sister, Mrs.
Warren Cooper and Mr. Cooper in
Ocala, ' Fla., and with Mrs. Mc
Guire's sister, Mrs. Gilbert Hamil
ton and Mr. Hamilton, at their
home in Fort Myers, Fla.
Mrs. Vissie Wykje, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Gibson, of
Franklin Route 4, has returned to
her home on Cowee after undergo
ing an appendix opertion at Angel
hospital about a month ago. After
leaving the hospital she spent two
weeks with her father and mother.
