Objectives of the campaign, to be earned out in every section of the state, by the far-flung organ ization of the Legiont is a 100 per cent enrollment of the past year's members by Armistice Day. In a letter to post commanders the membership committee says: "The department is going to of fer unusual prizes this year. Gold American Legion buttons will be awarded to one member of each post who meets the membership requirements in obtaining members. "There will, also, be awarded five solid gold life membership cards with dues paid for life to the five members of the American Legion; one from each of the classes, A. jB, C, D and E of the Department of North Carolina, who secure the most members in each class." These awards, particularly the capital awards for the five top "Go-Getters" will arrest the atten tion and stir the interest of every veteran. At the same time, the committee announced the organization of a "1939 Go-Getter Club" to be com posed, of Legionnaires who secure 10 or more memberships (new or renewal) prior to January 1, 1939. Silver stars, suitably inscribed, will be presented to each veteran who qualifies for membership in this club. The campaign will reach its cli max Friday evening when posts throughout the state hold their Armistice night meeting. The cam paign committee has suggested to the officers of each ' post that a .dinner featuring North Carolina food products be served the .meeting. Department Commander Pennell will speak to the-posts from WBT in Charlotte on a program begin ning at 8 p. m. and concluding at 8:30. v ' The following committee of the local post are urgently requested to secure as many new members, as they can before Armistice Day: Gilmer Jones, Rev. J; A. Flanagan, Tom Moss, William Waldroop, Tom Bryson; Charlie Phillips. In addition all other present mem bers, are asked to try to secure one new member by Armistice Day. MILLIONS SAY "IT TASTES SO (IOOD Dry Storag Place T Needed FbFSeodcorn Keep your powder dry! That, is the old army slogan. Keep your seedcorn dry! That is the advice given farmers by A. D. Stuart, seed - specialist of the N. C. Crop Improvement associa tion at State, college. Each year much valuable corn is lost in the state through" improper methods of selecting, storage and testing, says Stuart. . As. a result many growers obtain inferior crops the next season, when proper care and . treatment the year before might have brought higher yields and sounder seed. With field selection of corn over, the. first step in obtaining desir able seed is to place the selected ears in a dry, welUventilated room. The-ears should be stored in such a way as to allow a free circula tion of air around each ear. This may be accomplished by any one of the several types of seed corn hangers or "trees." A satisfactory hanger may be made with woven wire and any 2x4 uprights. The woven wire, which should have meshes large enough to permit ears to be passed through easily from side to side, is fastened by two two-by-fours of suitable length and a ' convenient distance apart. One length of the woven wire is placed on each side of the uprights in a manner such that the complete rack resembles a double woven wire fence with the meshes' opposite and four inches apart. The seed should be checked in January or February for germina tion. ' LIME AND CORN An application of limestone and superphosphate applied in the fall of 1935 was responsible for a 50 per cent increase . il corn yield on land owned by F. D. Warlick, of Swain county. Lespedeza was plant ed in the spring of 1936 on this treated area as well as on adjoin ing land and the sod allowed to stand for two years, but the two acres treated with the limestone and phosphate out-yielded the area having only the ( lespedeza sod plowed under. ...
