State College Answers Timely Farm Questions Q. Should my ewes . receive any grain ration just before lambing? 'A. The ewe .should, have ia small ration of grain three to four weeks before lambing unless she is very fat. A mixture of one-half pound 'tier hpad nailv of mm and oats or corn alone will be sufficient providing a legume hay is fed. If the legume hay is not fed, the grain ration should contain from 30 to 35 per cent of cottonseed meal or lin seed oil meal. Prior to three or four weeks before lambing it is not necessary to feed the ewes any grain unless the weather is severe and no grazing is available. Q. What, must I consider when selecting a tobacco pliant bed site? A. Firt, the bed should be locat ed in a well-drained spot. It should also have .southern or southwestern exposure so that the young plants will get ' all the sunshine possible. Select1 a loamy type of soil and lo cate the bed close to a water sup ply, if possible. It is also better'to have several small beds widely k. . . -7 " " ; - - ' - -, ' s h I I THE STORM " separated rather than one large bed. In this way, the chances for some of the beds escaping the blue" mold are greatly increased. In se lecting the new .sites, get as far away as possible from old beds. Q. Is it profitable to grade eggs before marketing? A. Egg gradmg is not only prac tical and profitable, but it soon will be an absolute necessity if the egg industry is to go ahead. The public is beginning to demand a quality graded egg and the produc er must, sooner or later, familiar ize himself with standard egg grades and qualify as a producer of such a product. Not only do eggs of known grade command the high price on all markets, but the grad ing gives the producer an oppor tunity to cull his flock to better advantage and save only those hens that are producing the best eggs.
