Road Men Put To Work
Monday Following
8-Day Layoff '
WPA workers on farm to mar
ket road projects were all put back
to work Monday . morning mfter
having beeri laid off since No
vember 25.
These projects employ more than
500 men, and it is. hoped that the
work will continue through the
winter. ' ( '
There are approximately 3,50 men
still out of work, but the forest
service has .several projects which
will furnish employment for most
of them and which (are expected to
be ready within the next few days.
This work, when started, will prob
ably continue for several months.
Doris Cabe Dies
At Home Near Otto
Doris Pauiine Gabe, six-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claude
Cabe.Mied at the home of her par
ents near Otto Friday at 6 p. m.,
following a two-day illness! Death
was due to acute nephritis and
pneumonia. s
Funeral services were held at
Asbury Methodist church Saturday
afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted
by the Rev. J. ,C. Swaim, pastor of
the ' church.' Interment was in' the
church cemetery.
Pallbearers were : Harley R. Cabe
Charlie Rogers, ' Hal Cabe, Ted
Blaine, Neville Cabe and Carl
Ramey. Flower girls, were school
mates, Betty Lou Norton, Mary
Keener, Dorothy Cowart, Roberta
Vinson, Lotis Bradley and Addie
Seagle. ' .
Surviving are her parents, three
brothers, Max, Charles and Bobbie,
and one sister, Jeanette.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rickman Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Rickman and Miss
Minerva Rickman, of Tocoa, Ga.,
great uncles and aunts of Doris,
were among those who attended
the funeral.

Former Macon County
Man, Dies In Canton
Funeral services for Thomas B.
Shepherd, 85, were held Wednes
day afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the
Franklin Biaptist church. The Rev.
J. A. . Flanagan, pastor of the
Franklin . Presbyterian church, and
the Revv C. F. Rogers pastor of
the Baptist church, were in charge
of the services. Interment was in
the Franklin cemetery.
Mr. Shepherd died at . his home
in Oariton Tuesday afternoon about
2:30 ''clock following an illness; of'
several; months. Death was due to
Bright's disease and complications.
Mr. Shepherd, a well known deal
er in real estate, was widely known
throughout Western North Caro
lina. He "was born and reared in
Macon county, and was the son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. William
Shepherd. On November 1, 1885,
he was married to Miss Rebecca
Ann Bradley, of this county. .
The pallbearers were : . C. Tom
Bryson, Lester S. Conley, Wiley
Sellers, J. Frank Ray, Ben McCol
lum and Charlie Higdon. .
Surviving are his widow, and two
daughters, Mrs. T. B. Higdon, of
Higdonville, and Mrs. Jake Smath
ers, of Canton; two sons, J. Fur
man Shepherd, of Asheville, and
Charlie Shepherd, of Mountain
Home,' Tenn., 11 grandchildren and
four great-greatgrandchildren, and
one sister, Mrs. Kittie Shields, of
Iotla.
Baptist Church Items
At the 11 o'clock worship the
pastor, Rev. C. , F. Rogers, will
preach a special sermon to men
and the "Brotherhood" will attend
and sit in a body and the .service
will be devoted to them. Of course
their friends will be welcome to
this service.
B. T..U. will meet at 6:30 p. m.
and at the same hour, the regular
meeting of the Brotherhood.
At 7 :30 p. m. the pastor will con
tinue his series of messages on the
Bible, the th'eme -being, "God Hard
ening Pharoah's Heart." The Plag
ues of Egypt in the light of arch
aeology will be used to illustrate
the Bible record.
-Next week will be observed as
B. Y. U. week in our church work.

At the regular meeting of Juna
luska Lodge No. 145, A. F. &
A. M., held on Tuesday night, De
cember 6, the following officers
were elected for the ensuing year :
Harley R. Cabe, worshipful master;

T. T. Love, junior warden; M. D.
Billings, treasurer, and R. R. Swan
son, secretary.
On January 3, at a; regular meet
ing, the installation of these new
officers will be conducted by Past
Master C. G. Moore and Installing
Marshall, J. L. Hauser.
Lighting Contest To
Start December 17
The residential decorative lighting
contest, si)onsored by the NantaJ
toala Power & Light company, will
begin on December 17. and end on
the 25th.
The first prize will be $15.00 in
cash and the second prize $10.00.
Each applicant must go to the
office of the Company prior to De
cember 17 and register his or her
name to be eligible to enter the
contest. Upon registration, the en
trant will be furnished a copy of
the rules of the contest.
Employees of the Company and
their families, and relatives, will not
be eligible to participate ' in the
contest.
Prizes, will be awarded for the
first and second best decorative
lighting displays at the residences
of the contestants, said displays" to
be made wholly outside the house,
or in such manner as can be judged
by a person passing on the street.
Judging will be made on original
ity, artistic arrangement and beauty
of display. There will be three
judges who are in no way connect
ed with the Company, and their de
cision will be final. '

Owner Of Summer Hill
Dies Suddenly At
Miami Home
John Sewell, 71, who has, been, a
summer visitor in Franklin for sev
eral years, and who owned the
large residence on Summer Hill,
died of a heart 'attack at his home
in Miami, t la., last Thursday.
Mr. Sewell was- well known to
most of the citizens of Franklin
and had a host of friends in trie
community.
Mr. Sewell was. sent to Miami by
Henry M. Flagler 42 years ago to
clear ground and start construction
of the Royal Palm hotel, another
in the chain of resort structures
erected by Flagler nd linked with
the north by his expanding railroad.
Miami at the time of Mr. Sewell's
arrival was a tiny fishing village
and Indian trading post with a pop
ulation of two families. His con
struction crew cleared away ine
mangrove and palm thickets on a
tract of land between the . Miami
river and Biscayne bay and the big,
wooden, yellow hotel went up,
Great Picture Coming
To Macon Theatre
The Macon Theatre will present
next Tuesday and Wednesday, De
cember 13 and 14, "Angels With
Dirty Faces," which is said to be
one of the greatest feature pic
tures filmed in recent times;
It tells the story of two boys'
ordinary dirty-faced, kids who
took opposite roads, one to the
shadowy underworld, the other to
the priesthood. 'This . picture is
packed with human interest, and
is expected to draw, a large crowd.

A dinner meeting of the bar
association of the 20th ' judicial dis
trict was held at Kelly's Tea Room
in Franklin Monday night which
was attended by many lawyers
from over the district. ','
