The Community Christmas Tree
THE Christmas tree in the courthouse on Christ
mas Eve will bring gladness to more than 300
children who. will receive gifts in the name of the
Christ Child whose birth we hold at this time "in
yearly remembrance." .
The American Legion and their friends have es
tablished this beautiful custom of thus bringing joy
to many children who look forward each year to
this happy occasion. From every corner of Macon
county will come little ones, many of whom live in
lonely places, and who seldom come to town. To
them especially the festive lights and decorations
will be a thrilling experience, the wonder and de
light of which will linger happily in their memories.
For many (he gay little bags, made and filled by
loving hands, will be the only bright spot until next
Christmas, Every effort has been made to reach
those whose Christmas will be meager at home.
In the hearts and prayers of those who are en
joying the blessings of a land at peace, with the hap
py exchange of gifts among each other, there is
! pity and deep concern for brethren in those lands
suffering under the evil spell of tyranny and war.
It was in such a world that Jesus was born. Ever
since His life and teachings have been the guiding
star of people striving- for a hetter wnrlrl tv. et;n
persists that unconquerable faith that God's gift to
the world will some day bring light and life to all
people. V
"How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is
given!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of
His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming, but in this world
of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear
Christ enters in."
If the Tongue Slips
THE highest social accomplishment is the ability
to live amiably with other people. It is not so
much what we do that promotes peace and happi
ness as what we do not say. Too often we are more
inquisitive than 'interested in our neighbors. Insati
able counosity has led to more gossip than any
other cause; and gossip has caused more unhappi
ness than crime. For gossip too often runs to slan
der, which may be social assassination. '
Telegue says : "If your foot slips, you may recov
er your balance ; but if your tongue slips, you never
can i ecau your woras. A

a simple, genuine wish that yours will be a
joyful Holiday Season and one of long and
pleasant memory.
So in keeping with the tradition of Christ
mastide and in the spirit of the Holiday Sea

for aJWerry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy
and Prosperous New Year.
