CHILDREN ENJOY SHRISTMAS PROGRAM On Wednesday afternoon, Decem ber 21, the children of Highlands and the surrounding community en joyed a special Christmas program at the theatre, given as a Christ mas present by the theatre and the business people of Highlands. The large bag filled with candy and fruits which was given to each child present attested the real Christmas spirit in the hearts of the people, ihe pitcure was "Penrod and his Twin Brother," with the Mauch Twins, a Gang Comedy and a mu sical short. The grown people of the com munity .enjoyed the same program in the evening, with the exception of the candy and fruit given to the children at the afternoon per formance. DRAMATIC CLUB SPONSORS CHRISTMAS TREE The Dramatic club is sponsoring the brilliantly illuminated Christ mas tree in the center of town at the intersection of Main and Fourth streets. Tudor Hall and his assistant, Elbert Gibson, brought the tree in from the forest, and were assisted in placing it by the Boy Scouts. The Scouts also help ed Mr. , Hall and Mr. Gibson to decorate the tree with its dozens of vari-cblored lights, and the town is furnishing the- electricity. This tree was made possible through the generosity of the business people of Highlands. P.-T. A. RECEIVES GENEROUS GIFT T? H Potts, oresident of the Parent-Teacher Association, has . . . . r I J . announced the receipt oi a nunuicu dollar check, given through this association for use in the school work! the eiver preferring to re main anonymous. This gift is very much appreciated by the entire school and the Parent-Teacher As sociation. Prof. Summer states that it is the largest "lump sum" that has been given during the time he has been connected with the school. SUNDAY SCHOOLS TO HAVE TREES The children of the Presbyterian church school will have their Christmas tree and program on this (Thursday) afternoon at 4 o'clock. The program and Christmas tree for the Episcopal church school will be Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Sunday .school Christmas tree and program at the Baptist church will be at 7 o'clock Friday evening, and the Methodist church school will hold its tree and an informal program at the! church at 7:30 Sat urday evening, when there will be presents for the older people as well as for the children. The combined enrollment of the four Sunday schools is 245. STORES ARE ALL GAILY DECORATED Practically all the stores are gaily decorated for the holiday season, and particularly lovely are the twin Christmas trees, with their multi colored lights, in the yard at thfc home of Mr. and Mrs. Tudor Hall, and the twinkling little tree on the lawn at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hall. There is another lovely Highlights G. STORY tree on the spacious lawn at- the W. H. Cobb home ablate with Christmas lights. LUNCH ROOM GIVES CHRISTMAS DINNER The school lunch room gave a special, Christmas dinner on Wed nesday with the following menu: roast, chicken, cranberry sauce, dressing, rice, gravy, potato salad, hot biscuit, cocoa, and a congealed fruit salad with whipped cream for dessert. I The school will close Friday, De cember 23, for a week's holiday. Classes will be resumed on Janu ary 2. MR. AND MRS. MARETT OBSERVES 53(rd ANNIVERSARY Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Marett cele brated their 53rd wedding anni versary on Saturday, December 17, by planting a hemlock tree on their new office grounds, which they call their "good wish" tree, because of the number of good wishes received from friends on this anniversary. ' Mr. and Mrs. Marett came to Highlands from Atlanta 15 years ago, and are numbered among our most esteemed residents. Mr. Ma rett was connected with Highlands Bank for several years, and has been in the real estate and insur ance business for the past few years. Mrs. Marett has always been active in church, library and club work, having organized the High lands Community club in 1924, which a few years ago merged with the Village Improvement so ciety and received the new name "Satulah Club." What sweeter wish could be made than that this beloved couple have many more happy anniversaries. MRS. SUMMER GIVES CHRISTMAS PARTY Mrs. O. F. Summer entertained her music pupils at a Christmas party at her home on Saturday, De cember 17. Special guests were the mothers of the pupils and Mrs. C. J. Anderson, Angela Anderson and Mrs. R. B. DuPree. A snort program of -piano solos, duets and vocal duets were given by : Barbara Zoellner, Jacquelin Aiken, Mozelle Bryson, Marie Neely, Frances Hedden, Florence Waller, Virginia Mae Edwards, Angela Anderson and Mrs. DuPree.' Mrs. Summer presented prizes to the following: first prize for prac ticing, Jacquelin Aiken ; second prize for practicing, Barbara Zoell ner ; first prize for scrapbook, Vir ginia Mae Edwards. After the programs, the pupils enjoyed exchanging presents and in presenting a small Christmas tree to Mrs. DuPree for Bobby DuPree. The refreshments were candle salad, Ritz crackers, cake and cof fee. CANARY E. REESE DIES AT HOME OF SISTER Canary Edward Reese, 52, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Carl Zoellner at 12 :30 o'clock Tuesday, December 20, after a several weeks' illness. Funeral services were held from . the residence at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, by the Rev. J. G. Benfield, assisted by the Rev. W. F. Beadle. . Mr. Reese is survived by a step mother, Mrs. R. W. Reese, and other surviving sisters are Mrs. W. R. Richards, Mrs. S. E. Potts, Mrs. B. A. Cleaveland, of High lands and Mrs. Nettie Tallent, of Franklin; three half-sisters, . Mrs. Charlie McElroy, Montgomery, Ala.; Mrs, Elizabeth Reese Potts, Chicago, 111.; Mrs. Ernest Crunk leton, Etna; one brother, J. W. Reese, Sr., three half-brothers, Rob ert, Norman and John, and an aunt, Mrs. Betty Reese, all of Highlands. The pallbearers were : Carey Reese, Henry Zoellner, Maurice Cleaveland Newell Wright, Ray Tallent and Leslie Reese. Inter ment was in pighlanda cemetery. Mn. W. H, Cobb, Mitt Mam Cobb and Miss Sara Gilder spent last Wednesday in Asheville. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Hall will spend the Christmas holidays with Mrs. Hall's parents in Hiartwell, Ga. Mr.and Mrs. B. C. Hanks, of rIiami Beach", Fla.,:are enjoying a winter visit at their summer home in High Hampton. They have been there several weeks and will remain until after the holidays. Their two children will arrive on Saturday to spend the Christmas holidays. The Hanks;, are prominent residents of Miami, and Mr. Hanks is the pres ident of the Florida Light and Power company. Mr. and Mrs; Frank B.
