CHALLENGE
When the great north winds of
winter
Come sweeping down and sweep
ing clown,
When the old earth rears her head
With snow-bright gilttering-crown,
When the sky is colder blue
Than crystal dreams could fabri
cate And the lakes reflect. her hue
In an ice-bound .steely state . . .
Something rises in me, strong
Exultant, surges forth "
And singing, cries in answer to
The challenge of the north !

BELLED CROWS
A Texas farmer claims that he
successfully kept his fields free of
crqjjfcs by catching one alive and
turning it loose with a small bell
attached to its neck. Th-; belled
bird, in trying to join the flock,
scared the ; others away, but re
mained in the Vicinity itself.
TERRACING
Tests show that an inch of rain
fall, when saved for cotton pro
duction by terracing the field, has
a cash value of $3.69 an acre, says
W. D. Lee, State College extension
soil conservationist.
Laura Textor. (left) and .Bettina Norberg, who say Alaska is "the
grandest place in the world," could not wait for opening of the Cali
fornia World's Fair next yearThey "mushed" there with Trainer Bill
Thompson's famous dog team and here are seen on palm-bedecked
Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.
