Overcash of Kannapolis, route 1, unwittingly started a blue grass pasture on his. farm two years ago by covering eroded places in the pasture with a coating of barnyard manure. X O'NEIL Macon County Home Demonstration Agent CLUBS WELCOME NEW MEMBERS The women of the Macon county demonstration clubs wish to .ex tend w an invitation to all women who live near a club to join their ranks. The total membership in the county is about 400. It may thus be seen that the county organization of home demonstration clubs is perhaps the largest in the county. For this, reason : it should be a force in the lives of the residents of the county. In order to let the public know of the work of the clubs, a general outline of the work planned for 1939 follows. This pro gram is planned by the . county council ' which is made up of the officers of the 12 various clubs; it is, then approved by the state ex tension department at Raleigh. General Program for 1939: Major Project Home Beautifica tion. Minor Project Foods and Nutri tion. Buying for the Household. . Health. County wide Project Schools. Recreation. Prt Ladies) May Play The major project is usually pre sented by the home demonstration agent. The topics taken up during the two months of this, year are general arrangement of the home grounds and base plantings. A food demonstration is given J. Fred Gray Is Honored At Clemson J. Fred Gray, prominent Clemson college junior from Franklin, was last week selected by Regimental Commander Col. Fred Hughes as one of the cadets to compose the section giving . special exhibition of extended order drill at Clemson on February 21. i "The .exhibition is designed to show the various movements of a section attacking under actual war fare conditions," said Col. Hughes," and the cadets chosen for the job have proved themselves exception ally good in military ability.' Gray has the added distinction ot ueing the section guide. Gray holds the rank of 1st ser geant in the cadet corps, is a mem ber of the 1st Sergeants' club, is on the executive committee of the Presbyterian Student association and chairman of the service team, secretary of the Junior Y. M. C. A., vice-chairman of the socials committee, and a dairying major. Gray is very popular . among the students, and is very active in oampus organizations. Rules Announced For 4-H Contests Rules for two 4-H livestock con tests in 1939 have been announced by L. R. Harrill, state club leader. The two winners will receive one? yoar scholarships to State college, each valued at $80. The awards, are donated by the N. C. Cottonseed Crushers association, but selection every other month by the foods leader. . The, home management leader presents a topic on Buying for. the Household. The topics, for the past two months have been How to Judge Sheets and Pillow Cases and Points to consider in Buying Bath Towels. Health leaders present the health topic each month. Topics to date have been What can I do to Keep my Eyes . in Good Condition and Good Teeth. . The education leader each month presents a topic dealing with schools. The topics discussed are "What do I Expect School to do for my Child, and Buildings, Equipment and Teachers. ' The recreation leader leads songs and a game at the end of the eve ning. Club Work Diversified From the foregoing paragraphs it may be seen, that club work takes in a wide scope of activities. It may also be seen that commun ity and county activities are a part of the interests of the women. , Need for Cooperation Cooperation is the thing that "Gets Us There." May we hope that every woman in each commun ity who is interested in her family and her county join a home demon stration club and also join in the work to be done at home and in each neighborhood. . of the winners will be under the supervision of the 4-H club office at State college. 1 The scholarships are offered for the best records in dairying and animal husbandry work. The ani mals must be exhibited at the 1939 state fair, and 40 points in the scoring will be on the basis of con formation, condition and type, of animal or animals, and showman ship in the fair contests. The other 60 points will be divided as fol lows: Project record, neatness and accuracy, "IS points participation in club activities, 20 points; and prof its on project, 25 points. Any duly enrolled 4-H club mem ber in North Carolina ' is, eligible to compete. The club member must submit evidence of ownership of animal or animals. The club mem ber must keep an accurate record showing the ' initial weight, kind and amount of feed, cost and value of feed, cost and value of animal or animals, weight and sale price in the case of meat animals, or the market value of .same at termi nation of the contest. In the .event the winner . is un able to use the scholarship it will revert to the 4-H scholarship fund. TIME TO. TOPf DRESS North Carolina growers of small grain are now preparing to top dress their small grain with nitrate of soda, according to reports from county agents. . Extension specialists, recommend an .application of ap proximately 100 pounds to the acre applied about March 1. Drunkenness HOGS AND CHICKENS Columbus farmers sold 15,941 pounds of poultry for $2,383.17 cash at the car door and 77 other farm ers shipped 66,210 pounds of fat hogs for $5,005.89 as a boost to the farm income of the county last week. The sales were arranged cor operatively by the county agent's office. TOO MANY RABBITS Out of 4,000 peach trees two years old in one of HawleysPoole's orchards in Moore county, not over 500 have escaped damage from rab bits which have eaten the bark off entirely around trunks of the trees. Only about 200 trees " were left without any damage whatever. FAVORABLE Florida citrus growers taking part in a recent referendum for regu lating fruit shipments through a marketing agreement voted better than 95fpeY cent in favor of the program. .
