Counties Get Dividends
From National Forests
Nearly one-fifth of the" 3,070
counties in the United States .shar
ed in the distribution of receipts
paid into the U. S. treasury last
year by the 158 national forests
administered by the forest .service
of the U. S. department of agri
culture.
Cash receipts from the sale of
national forest timber, use of na
tional forest range, and other forms
of land use amounted to $4,671,133
of which 25 per cent was turned
over to 38 states,' as well as" Alaska
and Puerto ico, for apportionment
on an area basis to the counties in
which national forest are located.
The funds thus made available to
local government units are used for
public schools and roads and arc
supplemented 'by an additional 10
per cent used by the forest service
for building and maintaining roads
and. trails within the national for
ests of the state from which the
income is derived. The forest ser
vice also assumes a large share of
the cost of constructing and main
taining public improvements .such
as roads, trails, campground de
velopments, and winter sports areas
within the national forests, using
other funds appropriated by con
gress in addition to one-tenth of
the receipts.
The forest service points out that
the largest receipts each year are
usually made by those national for
ests which have been under federal
management for long periods and
whose earning : capacity has been
improved by the systematic protec
tion and utilization of their natural
resources. .

Infertile Eggs Will
Hold Flavor Better
Infertile eggs will hold their flav
or better and will keep fresh long
er in hot weather, says. C. F. Par
rish, poultry specialist of the State
college extension .service, in offer
ing poultry suggestions for the
month of April. To obtain thistype
of eggs, all male birds .should be
sold when hatching is completed,
and plans made to replace them
for another year with pedigreed
males from a dependable breeder,
or least with males from a reliable
source, he explained.
Parrish offered these other sug
gestions for successful flock man
agement in the spring : Don't sell
out the flock of hens, but cull out
instead. Keep the birds that are
and have been heavy layers as in
t , 1 1 . 4
aicatea Dy worn leathers, plump
red combs and wattles, bright and
wide-awake eyes, bleached beak and
shanks, and a full, soft, flexible
abdomen free from hard lumps of
fat.
Since the days are getting long
enough for birds to consume enough
mash without stimulating them, as
is the case when a wet mash is
ted, it win pay to .start cutting
down, on the amount gjven each day
until the practice is stopped entire
ly. The stimulating practice will
have to be resumed in June when
hot weather will cut feed consump
tion, resulting in lower egg produo
tion.
However, a high quality laying
mash should be fed at this season
rather than try to economize with
a cheaper mash because eggs are
cheaper. It is true that reasonably
good egg production can be obtain
ed with cheap feed now. but if the
birds are to continue heavy produc

Farmer Independent
In Case Of War
By J. H. DEAN
Many ibelieve that before another
harvest Europe will be engaged in
war. We all know that the - able
bodied men of Europe are now
busy preparing for war.
The United States will be called
upon to supply food and material
for the war activities of the war
engagements of Europe.
Those who have lived through
wars arid . are familiar with history
know that prices, double and triple
and even quadruple under the in
fluence of war.
War or peace this country needs
full store-rooms.
A farmer who has. meat in his
smoke-house, corn in his crib, wheat
in his granary, cotton in the bale
and tobacco in the bulk will never
want. Such a farmer is rich. He is
secure. Such a farmer rarely ever
needs credit but if he does he can
get it. He is a good neighbor and
he will .have good neighbors. He is
America's No. 1 citizen.
When the farmer's store spaces.
are full he is prepared for war or
peace. So is our country.
The increase over a year earlier
of nearly , 5,000,000 hogs on Amer
ican farms January I is another
indication of the marked upward
trend in hog production, , says Earl
Hostetler, of State college.

When the price on corn is low it is a good rule to plant heavy and cul
tivate for a big yield. The soundness of this rule is based upon the follow
ing reasons: '
1st Weak-kneed farmers will cut acreage and cultivate poof ly
when the price is low.
2nd Nature rarely ever favors the country with two straight
good crop years.
The farmer who keeps his crib well-nigh full will always be ahead.
The cost per bushel for growing corn can be greatly reduced by the in
telligent use of fertilizer.
Basic O-Ten-Four fertilizer is chuck-full of "grain food." It will add
more to the yield of corn than any, other investment in connection with the
crop. For this reason it is the most popular corn fertilizer, and remember
clover and grass follow its use.
