Farm Families Resp Many Health ond To stions Suffffe Families in this section farming under the rural rehabilitation pro gram of the farm security adminis tration "are responding with a great deal of interest" to suggestions, of fered to help keep them well, says Miss Florence L. Stalcup, Franklin, home supervisor for Macon and Jackson counties. Better gardens, more milk and butter, chickens and eggs, for im proving the diet; screens for keep ing flies and mosquitoes out; safe wells and sanitary privies and prop er medical care are among the things listed as minimum require ments for health protection on the farm. Necessities of this sort-are looked after and where necessary for the family's rehabilitation such itqms are included in the family Duaget. Often the family's health is en dangered by being crowded into too small a space. Sometimes a dark and ill-arranged kitchen makes the mother's load harder to carry When a farmer has advanced to where he has sufficient equities to secure tne loan, money may be added by the FSA to make these larger housing repairs but this is possible only where ' the farmer owns his farm or where satisfac tory rental arrangements, can be made. ( "In spme cases conditions are such that a long time will be re quired to show marked improve ment,- but, by and large, the fam-, ilies show a willingness to try and that is encouragirg," Miss Stalcup points out. In helping the families to make their farm and home plans, the first thing to be stressed is the production of plenty of wholesome food. This means attention is giv en to the family garden which is the foundation of a balanced year round diet. During the year FSA borrowers who need it are advised by Farm Supervisor, William. G. Davis, as to best methods of mak ing a good garden just as they are assisted in adopting good farming practices for their field crops. Farm supervisors advise correct fertilizer to use, best kind of seed, when to .plant and how to get best succes sion of vegetables and how to com bat insects and diseases. , Miss Stalcup states that the home makers are being shown improved methods of food preservation for a larger variety of canned vege tables and fruits. During the year the families who need it are made loans for purchasing additional jars and in some cases pressure cookers are being added to the canning equipment.
