A special meeting of the Frank
lin Garden club is called for Mon
day, June 19, at 3 o'clock at the
home of Miss Mary Willis.
Purpose of the meeting is discus
sion of a playground for the chil
dren. Every member is urged to be

will meet for the regular monthly
meeting on Thursday afternoon,
June 23 at 3 o'clock. Circle No. 1
will meet at the home of Mrs. J.
M. Carpenter; Circle No. 2, will
meet with Mrs. W. G. Wilkie, at
her home on the Georgia road,
while Circle No. 3 will meet with
Mrs. Henry D. West at her home
on the Georgia road.
The Heck Memorial program
will be observed at these meetings,
and an of'ering will be taken at
this time. All members' are request
ed to be present.

AT MOODY FARM
The Macon County Chapter of
the United Daughter of the Con
federacy met on Mionday afternoon
at 3 o'clock at the Moody farm,
with Mrs. C Frank Moody as
hostess.
In the absence of Miss Eliza
beth Slagle, president, Mrs. Carl
S. Slagle, presided over the .busi
ness session.
The chapter has assumed the ob
ligation of keeping the plot, on
which the Confederate" monument
stands on the public square, clear
of all rubbish and trash and the
grass kept mowed. , . '
One of the three remaining con
federate veterans, W. M. Roper, of
Franklin Route 3, was reported to
be a patient at Angel hospital.
Members of the chapter were asked
to visit him. '
A very educational, as well as
interesting, paper on the life -and
career of Jefferson Davis, was read
by Miss Nora Leach.
The next meeting will be held
at the hiome of Miss Nora Leach,
on West Main street, on Monday,
July 10.
At the conclusion of the meet
ing delicious ice cream and cake
were served by the hostess and her
daughter, Miss Nora Moody.

AT MISCELLAEOUS SHOWER
Mrs. W. M. Bryson entertained
with a ' miscellaneous shower at
her home at Cullasaja on Saturday
evening, honoring Mrs. Weimer
Gibson, the former Miss Edna
Marthia Holland, of Cullasaja.
The Bryson home was artistical
ly arranged with bowls of pink
rases and other summer flowers.
Approximately 80 friends were
present bringing dainty packages
of attractive and useful gifts for
the honorce.

Raleigh last week.

lin Route 4, received his diploma
from the J. W. Cannon high school
at Kannapolis on June 6, after com
pleting all required work without
losing time from his job with the
Cannon Mills company in that city.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Clarke Soper,
who have been visiting their sister
in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the past
10 days, have returned to their
home, on Ridgecrest drive.

to her home on Franklin Route 2
after a few weeks' visit with her

brother, L. S. Penland, and niece,

in the fields of history, economics,
and English. .
. Each semester of her junior and
senior year she has been rated as
an honor student because of schol
astic achievements. . She has done
outstanding work in public speak
ing and parliamentary procedure,
and this year was tapped into
Delta Epsilon Alpha, honor society
for public speaking.
Miss Rickman has accepted a
position as teacher of histiory in
the Gramling high school, ram-
ling, S. C.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davis and
daughter, Barbara, of Winston
Salem, are spending two, weeks
with Mrs. Davis' parents, Mr- and
Mrs. John F. Cunningham, at their
