At their June meeting at Hotel
Edwards the Lions club elected the
following' officers: P. H. Potts,
president; W. H. Cobb, O. F. Sum
mer, Louis Edwards, first, second
and third vice-presidents; Colonel
Elliot Caziarc, secretary; Thad D.
Smith, Lion tamer, and W. A.
Hays, tail twister.
At this meeting Colonel- Caziarc
was appointed as a delegate to the
International Lions Club Conven
tion in Winston-Salem on June
12, 13 and 14. Colonel Caziarc was
accompanied on this trip Ijy; Mrs.

PROPOSALS SOLICITED
FOR POST OFFICE QUARTERS
A notice in the past office states
that proposals are being solicited
to be received in the office of
Post Office Inspector R. E. Dauch,
at Richmond, Va., up to and includ
ing July IS, to furnish quarters
suitable for post office purposes at
Highlands. A floor space of at
least 1.500 square feet will be need
ed, and a lease would cover five
to 10 years.

MRS. THAD SMITH
OPENS GIFT SHOP
In the new gift shop, The Rho
dodendron, which was opened Mon
day by Mrs, Thad D. Smith in the
building on Main street 'formerly
occupied as a town office, are to
be found many lovely things ;
among them numerous articles of
native wood, native pottery and
gorgeous Indian baskets, as well as
various hand-woven linens and
rugs. Tiny pottery jugs of wild
honey are also on display.
Mrs. Smith has for several years
owned an interest in a gift shop
at Cherokee and Ls, experienced in
this kind iof work, which is evi
denced by the artistic display of
gifts.
GEORGIA MOTORCADE
VISITS HIGHLANDS MONDAY
Highlands was visited Monday
by a 40-car motorcade of ladies
from different parts of Georgia,
who took advantage oi the oppor
tunity to see this section of the
country while their husbands and
friends attended the Lions Club
Convention held in Clayton. The
Oriental Arts and Mountain Crafts
gift shop was one of the places of
interest visited by this throng of
ladies. - t
Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Thompson
of Long Island, N. Y., , are spend
ing some time at Tricemont Ter
race. Mr. Thompson is one of the
officials of the Columbia Broad
casting company. Mr. and Mr,s.
P. JOsmar of Dallas, Texas, are
also guests at Tricement. Mr.
Osmar is southwestern representa
tive of the International Silver
company.
Bishop Robert Ej Gribbin of
Asheville, who conducted the 11
o'clock services at the Episcopal
church last Sunday, was the dinner
guest of Robert Hager.
Miss Louise .Hunter of Pend
leton, S. C, is ,the guest of Mr.
and Mrs. W. S. Diivis and Miss
Rachel Davis. Mrs. ' Hattie Porter
Waldroop of Franklin was a re
cent guest of the Davises.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bech,
a son, Saturday, June 10, at their
home on Chestnut street.
A son was born to Mr. and Mrs.
Noah Henry Saturday, June 10, at
their home in Horse Cove.
Richard Pierson, a student at
North Carolina State college, is
.spending his vacation with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Nail, at
their home in Shortoff. IHoward
Pierson, also a student at North
Carolina' State, is spending six
weeks in the R. O. T. C. camp at
Anniston, Ala.
Mrs. O. E. Young and son, Earle,
of West Palm Beach, Fla., arrived
Friday to spend the season at
their summer home on the Walhalla
road.
Mrs. I. L. Lamb has returned to
her home in Chattanooga, Tenn.,
after a visit with her son and
daughter-in-law, ' Mr. x and Mrs.
Lamb, at Poca No Mas.
Mr. and Mrs. David Norman and
son of Los Angeles, Calif., were
re.cent guests of Mrs. Norman's
brother and sister, Mr. and Mrs.
W. A. Bry.son, at their home at
Shortoff.
Miss Dorothea Harbison has re
turned from a visit with Mr. and
Mrs. W. A. Cuff in Knoxville,
Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Cuff were re
cent guests of Mrs. T. G. Harbi
son 1 and family. Mrs. Cuff is a
former teacher of the Clear Creek
school, and Mr. Cuff is connected
with the public schools of Knox
ville. Mrs. J. A. Hines has returned
from a seven weeks' visit with rel
atives "in Charleston and Kenans
ville. Miss Nancy Hines, who holds
a clerical position in Raleigh, re
turned with her mother for a va
cation of three weeks. (

Clemson College spent last week at
their home, Hemlock Cottage, on
Mirror Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. John C. Henley,
of Birmingham, Ala., spent the past
week-end at their home, Kettle
Rock, on the Dillard road.
Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Summer, who
recently moved into their new
home on Pierson drive, were given
a surprise house-warming last week
by a number of their friends, who
came laden with gifts for a minia
ture, or doll house, and refresh
ments for the evening.
Mrs. C. A. Sisson, of Atlanta,
is .spending1 some time at her sum
mer home, Stepping-Stones.
Dicky King is at Fort Benning
R. O. T. C. Camp at Columbus,
Ga., for six weeks.
Mrs. George Saussy and children
of Columbia S. C, are spending
two months at Highfield, the sum
mer home of Mrs. Saussy's moth
er, Mrs. Hampton Perry, on the
Walhalla road. Mr. Saussy will
join his family later for a three
weeks' vacation. Mrs. Perry is not
expected to visit Highlands this
summer.
Dr. . and Mrs. W. R. Craig and
family of Walhalla, S. . 'G, were
week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs.
J. E. Root.
Jim Hines has returned from a
visit with his sister, Mrs. E. J.
Bailey and Mr. Bailey, in Balti
more, Md. Mr. Hines also spent
some time in Washington, D. C,
and two days, in Raleigh on the
return trip.
L. G. Appley and Sam Batyhave
returned f rom a business trip to
Philadelphia.
William Way of Wayne, Pa., has
joined his family at their summer
home at the Country Club for the
season. "
Mrs. F. W. Altstaetter has made
additions to her summer home,
Rosemary, and has refinished
Laurel Lodge both inside and out
side. The work was done by Jack
M. Hall, contractor. Mr. Hall is at
present making a number of addi
tions to the E. S. Trousdale home
at the Country Club.

of Atlanta, have opened their .sum
mer home at the Country Club for
the season. c

Atlanta spent the past week-end
at their summer home on Bearpen.

turned to her home in Montgom
ery, Ala., after a week's visit with
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Redden and

Saturday in Highlands visiting a
number of his old friends among
the summer people.

street by D. W. Wiley is most at
tractive in its new. home, and all
kinds of fruits as well as vegetables
may be found here.
Mrs. W. P. Bullock who has
been the guest of her brother and
sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Root,
for the past several weeks, left
last week for a visit with her son
in St. Louis, Mo., before returning
to her home in Kansas City.
