Great Progress . Has Been
Made In The Past
25 Years
The large number of alphabetical
government agencies which have
come into prominence in the past
years tend to contuse the average
citizen's memory of the older agen
. cies, but in Western North Caro
lina the people have known for a
generation the U. S. Forest Service
and its Nantahala National 'Forest.
The older citizens can remember in
1911 when a purchase unit was es
tablished around the Nantahala
Mountain Kange for buying forest
land and how on January 29, 1920,
the President of the United States
proclaimed the boundaries of the
Nantahala National Forest, dedi
cating all its forest resources to
the best possible use for the great
est number of people.
After almost 20 years of develop
ment as a National Forest under
such legendary names as "Jimmie"
Shields, Arthur Wood, and John

The bath house and trail to the white sand beach
Byrne, . we find the Forest with
headquarters still" at Franklin,
North Carolina, and under Super
visor Charles Melichar. The Forest
grows in net acres owned by the
Government (322,365 acres), but
the gross boundary stays the same
at 1,349,000 acres. Supervisor Meli
char has a staff of technically
trained assistants to help with the
planning and administration of so
large an area. These are James
Averell, assistant supervisor; T. T.
Hall, executive assistant; Harley
Dunbar, improvement superinten
dent; Roane Bradley, land acquisi
tion ; Kay Brandt, timber and game
management; Emory Hunnicutt,
abstracter, and Clint Johnson, rec
reation planner
Thrw Ranger District!
In addition, the Forest is divid
ed into three Ranger Districts, each
in charge of a Forest Ranger. The
Rangers and Forest Supervisor are
the key individuals on a Forest.
The headquarters for the Wayah
district is at Franklin, with Ranger
John Wasilik in charge The next
largest to the Nantahala District
with Ranger Wm. L. Nothstein in
charge is at Andrews. The newest
one is the Tusquittee District
with headquarters at Murphy, and
under Ranger Wm. Palmer. It was
formed this month by splitting off
part of Cherokee ' county west of
Marble and all of Clay county from
the old Nantahala District.
Labor Fnom CCC Camp
The source of man power for
construction of improvements, fight
ing forest fires, and maintaining
roads and telephone lines is in the
three CCC camps remaining on the
forest. Once there were about a
dozen camps, but they have gradu
ally been withdrawn by the Direc
tor of the CCC until the remain
ing three are located as follows:
Camp NC F-10 at " Aquone with
Project Supt. B. J. Yost in .charge
of the work projects; Camp NC
F-23 at Otto with Project Supt.
Jones in charge, and Camp NC F
2i at Robbinsville with A. M. Deitz
in charge. Each camp has work
projects listed that will keep them
busy on worthwhile jobs several
years yet to come. Many of the
good gravel roads through the
mountains were fcuilt by the CCC
boys, so that now the Forest lists
205 miles of government built roads,
187 miles of government trails,
288 miles of telephone lines, eight
fire lookout towers, and seven pic
nic and camp grounds.
Cooperation With Other Agwicia
Beneficial help has come to the
Nantahala Forest , from many
sources in developing the county
to serve the greatest number of
people, for example, the State
Highway Department and the U.S.
Bureau of Public Roads cooperated
in completing the Highlands-Dil-lard
Road. The N. C State Forest
Service cooperates in forest fire
prevention and suppression work,
the Magistrates have been splendid
in upholding the state's laws re
garding burning the woods, the
N. C. Department of Conservation
cooperates in protecting the fish
and. game management areas from
abuse, the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park and U.. S. f Indian
Service cooperate in exchanging
fire detection information with the
Nantahala lookouts, the TVA help
by sending . fire prevention movies
to schools in Cherokee and Gra
ham counties, while last, but not
least, WPA has been very" helpful
in completing roads left undone
when CCC camps had to be dis
continued and in helping complete
Cliffside Recreation Area. All of
these agencies, working with the
Nantahala, have succeeded in mak
ing this a happier and more attrac
tive place to live in.
