The Franklin Library will be closed until Saturday afternoon for the purpose of cataloguing several hundred additional books recently donated by Mrs. Angie W. Cox, of Walworth, Wis, Zeb Angel, who has been in a critical condition at Angel hospital for several days as the result of an accidental gunshot wound, was reported today to be greatly im proved. Highway Patrolman J. H. Coman, who has been stationed in Frank lin for several months, has been transferred to Marshall, and Pa trolman Ed Guy, of Newlands, has succeeded him on this location. Jack Sanders states that Sanders' store will be closed next Saturday on account of Yom Kippur, Jew ish holiday. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie L. '. j COURAGEOUS SUNK Fifty-three survivors of the 20 million dollar British aircraft car rier Courageous, sunk by a Ger man submarine off the coast of Ireland last Monday, were rescued by the American freighter, Col lingsworth, and 400 by a British destroyer. Others were picked up by merchant vessels, 1,200 were aboard the carrier, 597 are ' dead or missing. The German command announced that the U-boat had escaped British bombs. . SCHWAB DIES Chas. M. Schawb, 77, first pres ident of the billion dollar U. S. Steel corporation, died in New York on Tuesday. Son of a mill hand, beginning at 18 driving stakes in a steel plant, the great steel magnate studied at night and gave piano lessons; at 21 became labor "trouble shooter" for Andrew Car negie, and at 35 president of -the Carnegie Steel company. KAISER'S GRANDSON KILLED IN ACTION A grandson of former Kaiser Wilhelm Prince Oskar, Jr., of Prussia has been listed ,as "killed in action," the first Hohenzollern victim of the German-Polish war. Box Supper At Liberty Next Saturday Night It is announced that there will be a box supper at Liberty school house next Saturday night, Sep tember 23, beginning at 8 o'clock. An interesting program has been arranged for the occasion, includ ing a talk by Guy L. H.ouk, sup erintendent of schools, string mus ic and other features. The public is invited to attend. S. S. Convention To Be Held At Cartoogechaye The Macon County Baptist Sun day School convention will meet at the Cartoogechaye Baptist church on Sunday, September 24, beginning at 2:30 o'clock, it has been announced by Paul Swafford, president. The program will open with a song by the congregation, The devotional will be led ty Miss Reta Bolick, of Franklin, followed by the roll call of the various churches of the county. A talk will be made by Mrs. C. F. Rogers, of Franklin, using as her theme "Sunday School Convention, What it is and the Benefits Derived." The Rev. George A. Goer, of Franklin Route 4,. will deliver the evening's message. All Sunday schools in the county are urged to send a large delega tion. . Navy Men Being Called For Service Two. Macon county, men who have seen long service in the, navy and were on the reserve list have been called back into .service. Charles Mason,' of Franklin, who is rated as torpedoman, was ordered to report to Charleston, S. C, for service afloat, and J. E. Jennings, of Cullasaja, chief petty officer, was also ordered to report to Charleston. Mason left Saturday and Jennings Sunday. Both men have been drawing re tirement pay. Mrs. Sally Calloway Dies In Spartanburg Relatives in Franklin received a message Sunday morning, inform ing them of the death of Mrs. Sallyv Calloway in Spartanburg, S. C. Mrs. Calloway, who was a for mer resident of Macon county, having .made her home in the lotla community for many years, was making her home with her son, Jim Calloway, at the time of her sickness.
