MERCHANT ' The EYES of THE $4 BE ON YOUR AD- l IF IT HAD BEEN van FN THIS ISSUE Shrubs Can Be Moved At This Time Of Year If you plan to do any trans planting of shrubs, do it right now, says Join) H. Hissis, extension landscape specialist of State col lege. November and ibecember are the best months for moving plants, and they will start their next grow ing season in better shape if they are given the winter, season to be come acclimated to the new loca tion,, he explained. "If the plant to be moved is deciduous (drops its foliage in the winter), it is not necessary to re move a ball ot earth with the plant," Harris advised. "Evergreens require the removal of dirt witli them. A two to six-foot native plant is usually the best ' size to move. Care should be taken to re move all the roots ' possible with the plant and avoid bruising the roots any more than is absolutely necessary. ' The specialist said that it will be found helpful in moving a na tive plant to dig a trench around the plant one season before mov ing it. This trench should be 18 to 24 inches deep, and the distance from the plant should be great enough to avoid cutting the larger roots. The object in dineine the rench is to stimulate the growth of fine roots near the base of the plant. After the olant is removed from the soil, it should be immediately set out in its new uosition. If it i be transferred some distance be fore transplanting or if there is otherwise any delay in transplant ing, the plant, should be ixicked in moist shavings or at least a wet sack kept around the roots. Harris emphasized that the hole in which the ulant is to be re-set should be considerably lareer and ueeper tnan is necessary to take care ot the longest roots. burns the third time, the water is just right. ' Of course it is less painful to buy a thermometer, but those instruments are easily broken around a farm, and they are often costly. Taylor said the water usually can be brought to the 150-degree tern perature by adding one bucket of com water to one-half barrel of boiling water. 1 No hog should be fed for 24 hours before it is to be killed, but during that time it should have plenty of water. Jt is easier to get a good bleed when the system is not gorged with foods, and the extension specialist pointed out that the meat will sour while in cure unless the hog bleeds strong ly when it is killed. ''Never over-heat or excite an animal before killing," advised Taylor, "because this produces: a feverish condition which prevents proper bleeding. The meat always cures better when the small blood vessels are free from blood and food particles." There are two general methods of curing pork the brine cure and the dry cure. Most other methods are merely variations of the two. In all cures it is absolutely neces sary to take all of the animal heat out of the meat, but it should not be frozen. Taylor invited interest ed persons to write to the Agri cultural Editor at State College, Raleigh, for Extension Folder No. 34, "Killing and Curing Meat on the Farm." It is free upon request. D. Lee, soil conservationist of the State col lege extension service. "Then there is a third advantage from strip cropping in that it affords pro tection to terraces," he declared. Lee said that many farmers in the erosion control demonstration areas, directed by the soil conser vation service, are usinii strin-cron- ing to . advantage. This type of rotation is comparatively new to many farmers in North Carolina. Un slopes where the fall is not very great, it is a common prac tice to have two strips in row crops and a third striD in a close- growing crop, alternating in this order all tlie way down the hill. ''But on steeper slopes, where the erosion problem is . irreater. it U advisable to increase the propor tion ot close-urowinir crons bv sowing down every other strip, llie specialist stated. Ihe use of legumes in close growing strips enables a farmer to gradually improve the fertility nf all fields, and at the , same time protect them anainst erosion. Sev eral fanners have reuorted a 21) to 5 per cent increase in crop yields since they lirst adopted the prac tice 01 strip-cropping, Lee stated. By retarding and soreadi off water, the strips of close- growing crops at intervals down me slope keep silt out of the flow lines of terraces and prevent them from over-toppinif. This is -sne. cially noticeable during heavy rains. Should Scald Hogs n 150-Degree Water Water should be ' ISO Hwr.c Fahrenheit for test results in scalding hogs at killing time, ad vises H. W.
