THE FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE HIGHLANDS MACONIAN THURSDAY, DEC. 14. 1939 PAGE FOUR h t $ xtxxxkl x xx tytt s s ait it, Published every Thursday by The Franklin Press At Franklin, North Carolina Telephone No. 24 , . VOL. LIV Number W Mrs. J. W. C. Johnson and B. W. Johnson.... .Publishers P. F. Callahan Managing Editoi Carl P. Cabe Advertising Entered at. the Post Office, Franklin, N. C, as second class matter , Buy Your Gifts At Home AT least one. experience this season has been that, after visiting . Asheville and the display of Christinas goods in the shops, this person came home to Franklin; and found everything desired for gifts in the well stocked stores right at home. Not in the same quantity as big city stores, but in well selected and best quality of merchandise in great variety, the Franklin stores offer all that the average citizen could desire. In addition, the same goods are found in many . instances to be lower in price for the identical article. Add to this the ex pense of a trip to Asheville or Atlanta, with the physical weariness and time consumed, Mr. and Mrs. Citizen, and you will find more satisfaction in buying from your friends and neighbors who, one way, and another, contribute to your prosper ity, perhaps. Franklin is a good town to live 'in, so please stand by your home merchants, and help make for all "A Happv Christmas and a Prosperous New Year." Buy Christmas Seals 17E know that the Christmas seal is not good " for postage but that in every other way it is good for the man who buys it and puts it on his letters; for the clerk who cancels the letters with a glad thought for little children with every whack; for the postman who delivers it with a smile as broad and as good as Christmas itself, and last of all for the annals of history, the nation-wide cam paign against tuberculosis." We quote this from that now famous-letter that introduced the Health Seal to America. It is worth repeating from our health nurse's' excellent article in last week's Press. . Your Christmas mail carries added joy with the seal on it. Buying Christmas Health Seals makes you one of the army fighting under the sign of the double-barred cross against man's enemy, Tuberculosis. Christmas Baskets HTHE beaytiful custom of Christmas, baskets is one that makes Christmas happier for the giver as well as the recipient. Throughout our land the touch of friendship and good will is expressed by a basket of good things to a needy household. Surely this bit of giving with no thought of exchange of gifts, and in the name of the Christ child to whom wise men brought gifts, will bring a lasting happiness. It is hoped that many in Franklin will respond to this appeal of the welfare department, so that no one ma v lack Christmas cheer. . - The Price of Crime IUDGE PLESS' charge to two youthful prisoners in court last week deserves a wider audience than the courtroom afforded. Two Highlands boys were convicted and sen tenced for a grave offense house-breaking. From time to time, for. many years, the homes of summer visitors have been entered and robbed. One of the two boys facing a long prison term is convicted for the third time of the. same offense, we under stand. The judge made clear the fact that such a crime injured the offenders' own families and neighbors even more than the persons robbed of valuable property. Most of the native people depend for their living on the summer visitors, especially those who own homes. If property is not safe, they will go elsewhere. Thus, the judge pointed' out, those who commit crimes create distrust of those who arc innocent and law abiding, depriving them of jobs as caretakers, caddies and other opportun ities of earning their ! living. . , Thus, to the bitterness of discovering that "crime does not pay" is added the remorse of injuring the innocent. This side of the sad picture needs to be the serious crime of house-breaking. looked at by others who may be tempted to risk More Donations -For Building The committee for the com munity house for negroes grate fully acknowledges these dona tions: Mrs. Roy Masbburn, Mr,s.
