State College Offers Free Tobacco School The fourth annual tobacco short course for adult farm men and women of the state will be held at State college January 10-19, it is announced by Dan M. Paul, director of agricultural short courses at the college. Tuition is free. A charge of $1 is made for registration and a certificate of at tendance. A limited number of beds are available in the athletic room of the college Y. M. C. A. at 50 cents per night, and meals may be se nt red in the college cafeterias at a reasonable cost. About 000 persons attended the three previous tobacco short courses held at the college, and 210 grow ers received certificates for attend ing all sessions of a short course. Registration is open to white men and women over 16 years of aye. Paul announced that instruction will be given" in all phases of to bacco production, and related sub jects, including, tobacco seed, fer tilizers, insect and disease control, soil fertility, and the value of forest- thinnings to obtain tobacco wood. The discussion leaders for the four days of the school will lie E. Y. Floyd, extension tobacco specialist and AAA executive of ficer for the- state, on Tuesday, January 16; Prof. C. B. Uses 7000 Tons Of TVA Phosphate Demonstration farmers, .in 15 Western North Carolina counties have used. 14,37,400, or 7.193.W tons of TVA phosphate sinc.e the co-operative TYA-Exten-wn farm program began in the mountain area in 1935, it is reported by R. W, Shotfner of State college, who is in charge of , the program. The farmers used 3,475,100 pounds dur-, ing 1939. . Concentrated phosphatic. fertiliz er is u.e-d on sod crops as the key material to procedures beiny sought for holding water and soil, and building fertility, the aims of the demonstration farm program.
