Billy Berry Free Trees For Planting Sam Mcndenhall, county agent, has released the following infornia tion for the benefit of all interest ed in tree planting under the gov ernment's program. Recently a letter was . mailed from the county agent's office to the farmers of Macon county which contained information re carding tree planting. Since that time orders for approximately 200,000 trees have been taken to be delivered around the first of the year. Farmers who have land that is washing or that is .subject to wash ing arc urged to take advantage of this opportunity. A total of $J() or $375 per acre may be earn? ed by this practice providing the trees are set at a rate of not less! than 1000 per acre on land that is subject to erosion and are pro tected against destruction by cat tic? This payment is in addition to the regular soil conservation payment that is set up for each farm. The trees are furnished to the farmers by the Tennessee "Val ley Authority for the purpose of erosion control. No charge is made for the trees. LIGHTED TREE ON MAIN STREET The brilliantly lighted Christinas tree at the intersection of Main and Fourth streets is much admired. This tree was installed by the Boy Scouts. S. S. CLASS SENDS BOX TO ORPHANAGE Members of the intermediate class of the Presbyterian Sunday school met at the home of their teacher, Miss Ruth Carter, last Sunday afternoon to pack the usual Christmas box for the orph anage. This class had as its guests the junior class and its teacher, Miss Dorothea Harbison. A social hour was enjoyed and also a re hearsal . of the special Christmas program to be given by the junior class next Sunday morning at the Sunday school hour. CARD CLUB ENTERTAINS The Wednesday Card Club was entertained last week by Mrs. J. A. Hines. The living room and dining room were decorated with holly and other Christmas ever greens: .Mrs. Elliott Caziarc was warmly welcomed by the club after an absence of several weeks due to illness. Mrs. C. C. Potts was winner of the high score prize, and the consolation was awarded to Miss Bernice Durgin. Mrs. G. W. Marett was final winner of the traveling prize. The hostess was assisted in serv ing a delicious salad and sweet course by members of the club. ' EPISCOPAL SERVICES ON CHRISTMAS DAY A Christmas Day service will be held at the Episcopal church at 11 o'clock by the Rev. Fank Bloxham. Members of other High lands churches are invited to join the congregation in this festival service. Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Applcy, their two sons and two daughters of Chicago, 111., were week-end guests at the Potts House. The Appleys are Opening their cottage on the Walhalla road where they expect to spend the next two weeks. Rev. and Mrs. J. G. Benfield left Tuesday for Winston-Salem where they have gone for Mrs. Lawrence Hicks who is convalescing from a major operation at the Baptist hos pital in that city. The party will return to Highlands Thursday aft ernoon.
