CONLEY, PHONE 104 WOOD-MASHBURN Miss Hester Wood of Gastonia and Waynesville, was married to Thec-dore Mashburn, of Sylva, on February 19 in Clayton, Ga. The bride is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. N. A, Wood, of Franklin. She i. a graduate of the Franklin high school, and for the past several months has been resid ing in Gastonia, where she is em ployed. Mr. Mashburn, a graduate of the Sylva higli school, until recently was in business with his father, E. O. Mashburn, in Sylva. He is now 'employed' at Gastonia, where the couple will reside. MiSS AUDREY CONLEY HONORED AT BREVARD Miss Audrey Cbnlcy, who 'has been attending Brevard college, was initiated into the Sigma Pi jvlpha, honorary language fraternity on Saturday evening, March 9. Following the initiation a formal banquet was given for the new members, at which there were ap proximately 30 guests. . Miss Conley is the only Macon county student who has attained ' this honor at Brevard. In OTder to be elected, an aver age of B must be . made in all subjects. CLAUD BOLTON HONORED AT BIRTHDAY PARTY Miss Margaret Slagle entertainr ed several friends' Saturday eve ning, March 9, Willi a lovely din tier party, as a birthday surprise to Claud Bolton. "A beautiful lace cloth covered the dining table, which was set for ten,. The centerpiece was of yel low rose buds and snapdragons. Four white candles completed the attractive centerpiece. -The" delightful, dinner was brought to a close with Mr. Bolton cut ting the' first slice of the birthday cak,s' Each guest after him was allowed to slice his, own piece of cake. ATHLETIC CLUB TO MEET TUESDAY EVENING . The young peoples' athletic club will meet on Tuesday evening, March 19, at 7:30 o'clock in the basement of the Frdnklin Aletho dist church. This meeting, which is the first to be held this year,, is for the purpose of reorganizing and for the election of new offic ers to serve through the new year. All the old members are asked to be present and all who wish to attend or become new mem bers, are cordially invited. GIRL SCOUTS ASKED TO TURN LISTS OF BADGES Airs. Alelichar, girl scout leader, requests that all girl scouts at the next meeting turn in fees and lists of badges earned so they can be ordered for the court of honor. U. D. C. MEETING HELD WITH MRS. G. M. SLAGLE The Macon County Chapter of the. United Daughters of the Con federacy met on Monday after noon at the home of Airs. George AI. Slagle, with eight members present. Airs. Herbert E. Church, presi dent, presided and the meeting was opened by the reading of the ritual, led by the Chaplain, Airs. T. J. Johnston. The treasurer reported that the chapter's obligations, dueff, taxes and other incidentals for the year of 1940 were already paid and a nice sum was in the treasurery for the year's work. 'The chapter decided to take over the keeping of the Confederate square as one of their projects fur the year., This will be to keep the grass mowed and clear of all rubbish ' and trash. In doing this, they ask the cooperation' of every, one in helping to keep ' this plot clean and attractive. Airs. Mildred Uarzell Veasy's name was presented for member ship and, received favorable action. Airs. Zeb W. Conley read an interesting - article on the report given by Mrs. Lewis E. Fisher, president of the. North Carolina Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, on the things accomplished by the various chap ters during the past year. The next meeting will be held at the, home of Mrs. Zeb W. Con Icy with Mrs. Sam L. Rogers as associate hostess. The hostess, assisted by her daughter, Aliss Margaret Slagle, served a sweet and salad course at the conclusion of the meeting. Those attending 'were Mrs. T. J. Johnston, Mrs. , Herbert E. Church, Mr. A. B. Slagle, Mrs. Lon Campbell, Mrs. . L.' Veasy, Airs. Zeb Conley and Mrs. Lester S. Conley. . Air. and Mrs. Monroe Straine have returned to their home at Gneiss, after spending a week with Airs. Straine's brother, Mar shall Trentham and sister, Miss Alolly Trentham, in Jefferson City, Tenn. Airs. W. B. McGuire and daugh ter, Aliss Elizabeth McGuire, re turned to their home here Friday, after spending several months in Fort Myers, Fla,, with their daughter and sister, Mrs. J. W. Cooper and Mr. Cooper. They also, visited their daughter and sister, Mrs. Eugene C. Bullock and Mr. Bullock in Hamlet before their re turn to Franklin, Air. and Airs. Russell Adams, of Greenville, S. C, spent last week with Mrs. John W. Hall at her home on Bidwcll street. Airs. Rebecca Harrison Smith, of Asheville, spent the week-end with her uncle and aunt, Dr. and Airs. Frank T. Smith, at their home on Bid well street. Aliss Bonnie Parrish, who is working as beautician in Sylva, spent the week-end with her par ents, .Mr. and Airs. E, H. Parrish, at their, home at Etna. Airs. Jack Sanders was called to Atlanta, last week on account of the illness of her mother, Airs. Janet Vitner. Aliss Laura Stillwell, of Ela, is spending several weeks with her sister, Airs. J. F. Cunningham and Air. Cunningham, on Franklin Route 1. Attorney Dover R. Fouts and son, Danny, of Burnsville; D. R. Fouts, Jr., who is a student at Alars . Hill college, and Henry Negron, of Porto Rico, who is also a student at Alars Hill college, spent the week-end with the for mer's father, Dr. J. H. Fouts and Airs. Fouts, at their home on Iotla street. Mr. and Airs. J. S. Porter and son, Charles, spent the week-end here with their mother's, Airs. J. A. Porter, at her home on West Alain street and 'Airs. C. C. Cun ningham on Alain street. William Blaine, who is driving the Smoky ; Mountain bus from Asheville to Gatlinburg, '. Tenn., spent the week-end with his par ents, Air. and Airs. C. T. Blaine at their home on Harrison avenue. Airs. Martha AlcLeod, who has been ill for several weeks,, has recovered sufficiently to be able to return to her home in Highlands. Mr. and Mrso Thomas Siler and daughter, of West Asheville, were over Sunday afternoon to see Air. Siler's mother, Mrs. Fannie Siler, who is ill at her home here. Mrs. R. P. Bennett, of Bryson City, was (visiting Airs. Rr AI. Waldroop at her home' on Harri son avenue last Thursday. Dan R. Reynolds left recently for Dee, Ore., where he has em ployment with the Oregan Lumber company. Aliss Evelyn Scott has returned to her work in Greensboro after spending several days with her father, Claude Scott and Airs. Scott, at their home in the Bethel com munity. Air. and Mrs. Lester Henderson and three children left last week for Florida where they plan to spend several weeks in different sections of the state. Mr. and Mr.s, Sam Greenwood, of Gainesville, Ga., spent the week end with "Mr. Greenwood's aunt. Miss Lassie Kelly and Mrs. Green wood's mother, Mrs. Ervin Patton, at her home on Franklin Route 1. Mrs. J. B. Collins, who has been suffering for the past three weeks from tserious fractures of both legs received when she fell at her home on Iotla, was reported to be un improved Tuesday.' Air. and Mrs. Robert L. Full bright and family, of Lake Juna luska, spent one day last week vis iting her father, W. P. Deal, at his home on Franklin Route 4. R. E. Hurst, of Ridgecrest, and niece, Airs. Robert Kr earner, of Baltimore, Md,, spent Friday with Air. Hurst's .sister, Miss Nettie Hurst at "Woodhurst Farm" on Franklin Route 3. Mrs. Kreamer is the former Miss Nell Hudson, of Franklin. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cunningham spent Sunday in Canton and Ashe ville with friends. Air. and Mrs. Charlie B. Bolick and Mr. and Mrs. Crayton Maffett have returned to their homes in Washington, ' D. C, after being here during the sickness and death of Mrs.. Bolide's and Mrs. Alaffett's mother, Mrs. Hester Sellers. The Rev. Bob Burnette from Toccoa Falls, Ga, is assisting Air. and Mrs.'R. H. Hull in the Union Sunday school work in the rural communities for some weeks. Mr. Burnette is from Bessemer, Ala.
