State College Answers Timely Farm Questions Q. What lawn mixtures are adapted to different' sections of the state A. For the coastal plain, a mix ture of 2.6 pounds of Italian rye grass, 0.3 of a pound of white clover, and Bermuda grass root cuttings is recommended. For the piedmont and mountain sections, a mixture of 1.3 pounds of Kentucky blue grass, 0.7 pounds of red top, and 1.3 pounds of Italian rye grass is recommended. Each of these mix tures will seed 1,000 square feet of lawn. Q. When should beef cattle be bred? A. It is advisable to allow the bull to run with the cow herd in May, June, and July, and the calves will all arrive in February, March, and April the following year. There are several advantages for having the calves come at this time of the year. Dry cows can be much more easily and cheaply wintered than cows nursing - calves. Winter and early spring . calves usually grow off faster and make better animals tljan calves dropped in the summer and fall Calves dropped close together in the spring of the year can all be weaned at the same time. Their uniform age makes it possible to pasture, house, and feed them together. Q. What is the nature of, and the control for, the rust which often attacks leaves and fruit of apples ? A. Rust is one of the oddest diseases affecting the apple. The parasite which causes this disease spends part of its life cycle on the annlf and oart on the common red cedar tree. The presence of both of these plants is essential to the existence of the rust parasite. Elim ination of the red cedar trees for a distance of one-half mile or more from the orchard is the only practical method of controlling ap ple rust. Distinctive Uniforms Worn By 4-H Members Wider use of the distinctive 4-H Club uniforms is being urged by L. R. Harrill, 4-H Club leader of State college. AH members attend ing the annual 4-H Short Course at State college July 22-27 will be required to. wear uniforms. Miss Willie N. Hunter, exten sion clothing specialist, and her assistant, Miss Julia Mdlver, have designed the North Carolina 4-H uniforms, which are. of the same general style as used in all other states. The girls' ' uniform consists of green : broadcloth, with white col lar and facing, green thread, "white simulated patent leather belt, side fasteners, and white pearl buttons for cuf flints. A white hat and a pair of comfortable, white walking shoes complete the outfit. The boys' uniform is a white shirt, white duck trousers, black shoes, black tie, and black belt. Many girls make their uniforms as a part of a clothing project, al though this is not a requirement. Harrill insisted that 4-H mem bers wear their uniforms; at out standing events. The calendar of club events for 1940 starts with leaders' training schools at the Millstone 4-H Camp May 7-11, at a place in Eastern North Carolina yet to be designated May 14-18, and at the Swannanoa 4-H Camp May 21-24. The State Older Youth Confer ence will be held at State college June 4-8, and the National 4-H Camp is scheduled in Washington, D. C, June 12-19. Following the short course, the Wildlife Conser vation Conference will he held August 27-31, arid the State Dress Review at State college on October 4.
