CORBIN-PENDERGRASS ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Air. and Airs. Henry D. Corbin of Franklin Route 4, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Alargaret Elizabeth Corbin to James Elbridge Pendergrass, of Franklin. , Air. Pendergrass, who is the son of Air. and Airs. J. N.. Pendergrass of Franklin, is now working in Caldwell, Idaho. F. S. JOHNSTON BIBLE CLASS HONORS MRS. CALLAHAN As a farewell courtesy to Airs. P. b. Callahan, who left Wednes day.to make her home at Spindale, the F. S. Johnston Bible Class of the Franklin Methodist church en tertained with a party ion Tuesday afternoon at the home of Afrs. C. C. Cunningham. There were 26 members and visitors present. Airs. Callahan has been teacher of this class for more than 10 years. Patton. , Marshall Cunningham, Lawrence Elliott and Dover Miller left; last week for Alount Kiser, N.. Y., where they have employment. Air, and Afrs. R. T. Bryson re turned to their home in Detroit, Mich., last. week, after spending several weeks with their parents, Robert T. Bryson and Mrs.' Bry son and W: C. Sheffield, at West Mill. Afr. and Airs. George B. Patton, of Raleigh, are spending this week here with Airs. Patton's mother, Airs. Sally Penland, while Air. Pat ton is representing some of his clients' in civil court. 1 Airs. Lyman C. Higdon left Sun day for Duke hospital, Durham, where she will undergo treatment. Airs. Burton Boesser and son, of Virginia Beach, Va., are spending few days with Airs. Virginia Briggs who has been employed in Miami for. the past three months spent the week end with her parents, Afr. and Airs. D. G. Stewart. Rev. Frank Bloxham is attending the annual convention of the Episcopal church of the diocese of North Carolina being held at Valle Crucis on Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Eloi.se G. Franks, superin tendent of public welfare for Ala- con county attended the annual convention of the North Carolina conference for social service which met in Winston-Salem April 21, i and ZJ. The conference theme was "Health Needs in North Caro lina." Air. and Mrs. Bill Gribble and family, of Lake . Helen, Fla., have moved into the A. R. Higdon apart ment on the Georgia road. Afr. Gribble is employed in the Nanta- hala national forest service. Mr, and Mrs. Lester Henderson and three children, who spent the past two months in Florida, have returned to their home here. Mrs. Earl Rickman, who under went an operation for the removal of, her appendix. at .Angel . hospital last week, is reported to be get ting' along nicely. Patricia, two-months old daugh ter of Afr. and Afrs. Chace Tatham of Robbinsville, who has been in Angel hospital with bronchial pneu monia, is much improved and has been removed to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Afrs. Fred AIcGaha at West's Mill. Little Aliss Lelia To Gailey, daughter of Mr. and Airs. Clyde Gailey and Master' Robeert Finley, son of Mr. and Airs. W. H. Finley, who are mascots to the senior class of the Franklin high school, enter tained the class and several of the teachers' on Tuesday night with a theatre party. Lester, Wymer, Robert and John Ray, of Lincolnton, spent the week-end with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Ray at West's Alill. Lorene Angel, daughter of Afr. and Airs. Alartih Angel, of Bonny Crest, is confined to her room, from the results of a fall she re ceived on Sunday afternoon. Mildred Bryson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C Tom Bryson ; Andrew G. Jones, son of Afr, and Mrs. Gilmer A. Tones and Harold T. Sloan, Jr., son of Afr. and Airs. Harold T. Sloan are Afacon coun ty students on tour with the con cert choir of Brevard College. The choir will fill 29 engagements dur ing an 11 day tour of the state ex tending to Wilmington and Eliza beth City. . PAGE THREE Parent-Teachers ? Finley, principal, address ed the meeting, outlining the fol lowing accomplishments of thi; school year; Inter-scholastic ath letic program; physical education for boys and girls:; health program in cooperation with county health unit; construction of club activities in the school; newly formed stu dent union; some vocational and educational guidance; libraries im proved, high i school as well as elementary ; regular instruction with 30 subjects taught in the high school. Bus service was the great est in the history of the school, with a total of 1,000,000 passenger miles for 140,000 nut.il davs and 55,000 miles for buses. Airs. Gordon Moore, of the Scout committee, reported that the Franklin troop, which is sponsored by the P,-T. A., ' had grown from M Kirls to 50 in onevrar Fond Farewell Trimont Inn Mrs. Drake's Final Rites Conducted Ftmeral services for Airs. W. T. Drake, 72, were held Afonday morn ing at the Antioch Babtist church at Blairsville, Ga. She died Sunday morning at 10 o'clock following a heart attack after an illness of several weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jesse Collett, of Junaluska, two miles from Andrews. Surviving 1 are three daughters, Mrs. H. H. Garrison, Hayesville; Mrs. Rush Hodgins, Prentiss, and Mrs. Collett; six sons, Arthur, of Franklin; Lester, Black Mountain; Carl, Swannanoa; Herman, Young Harris, Ga.; Haskel, Blairsville, Ga., and Norman Drake of Hamilton, Wash.; 52 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrsi Frank Fouts, Franklin, and Mrs. Hettie Jones, Elizabethton, Tenn and two brothers, John Baldwin, Franklin, and David Baldwin, Okla homa. Mrs. Drake was born in Franklin on June 1, 1867. She was a mem ber of the Baptist church there. She had lived here with her daugh ter following tht death of her hus band three jrori go, T. E. L. CLASS TO MEET WITH MRS. WEYMAN The T. E. L. Class of the rrank lin Baptist church will meet on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of Airs. Jack Weyman on Harrison avenue. Airs. C. S. Tilley, Alr.s. John DeHart, and Aliss Charlotte Conley will assist in entertaining. All members art urged to attend. ? 1 Bidding farewell to his infant bob is this British soldier who returns to the front after a leave of ab sence. The baby was born while his dad was at the front.
