AVERELL OF CALIFORNIA Afrs. Frank M. killian and Mrs T. W. -Angel, Jr., were hostesses to the Franklin Garden Club on Monday -afternoon at the home of Mrs. Killian for its regular month ly meeting with approximately : 25 members, present. Mrs. Killian, president, presided, and following the various reports, a committee of five was appomteu to make plans to beautify the lot on Main street on which the curb market is located. The committee consists of Miss Mary Willis, -chairman, Mrs. Walter E. Furr, Mrs. W. A. Rogers, 'Mm. I. T. Peek and Mrs. James L. Averell. This committee will select their workers from the members of the club who will cooperate in this work. . ' Mrs. Herbert E. Averell, of Oak , land, Calif., who has . spent some ' months with her children, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Averel, told of some of the work accomplished by the club to which she belongs and made helpful suggestions to this club. i Mrs. J. S. Sloan, who spent the winter in Tampa, Fla., Uld of some "of the tours and flower shows that she attended while there. " ' ' . . Mrs. I. T, Peek, in charge of the program, spoke on the "Kind of Plants for Summer Use" and presented a list of summer and fall perennial,' to each of the members. Delicious refreshments were serv ed at the conclusion of the meet ing- also took parts on the program. The piano for the program was furnished through the courtesy of Oscar C. Bryant. ST. AGNES PARISH PARTY AT HOME OF MRS SELLERS St. Agnes church will have a parish party , at the 'home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sellers on Fri day evening, at 8 o'clock. The la dies of the auxiliary will have charge of the entertainment and refreshments. as her . week-end guest, Miss Frances -Edwards, also a student at Greensboro, AIrand MrsWRSfcaggs and daughter, Betty Lou, of Walhalla, S. .C, spent Sunday in Franklin with friends. Claude Boone and Dave Ditmore, of the Flats com munity, were in Franklin Satur day to attend "Gone With the Wind." . Miss Mildred Bryson returned to her school work at Brevard college Monday, after spending the week-end with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Bryson at Culla- saja. '. Rev. and Mrs. Alexander Kenner of Covington, Ky., and Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Davis of Highlands Recent Bride BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR MR. CHURCH Mrs. Herbert E. Church enter tained with five tables of bridge in honor of Mr. Church's birthday 'last Saturday evening. The high score prizes were awarded to Mrs. James A. Sutton and R. S. Jones, the consolation . prize going (to Emory . Hunnicutt. The living room was adorned with an artistic arrangement of tulips, narcissus and other spring - flowers. Airs. F. L. Siler has returned home after spending the- winter with her daughters, Aliss Annie Will Siler in New York City and AIr.s, Michael D'Onofiro in Wan taugh, Long Island. Air. and Airs. J. S. Conlev have returned from Washington, D. C. where they were called on account of the illness of their daughter, Miss Grace Conley, who' underwent an appendix . operation. Georgia Sloan and Airs. Reba Tessier last Thursday. ' Airs. Beshears, the president, carried the program through on time in her efficient manner. Airs. T. W. Porter gave a full account of the annual meeting of the Western Nrth Carolina Wo man's Alissionary Societies in Sal isbury last month. Fifty years ago, the first meeting of this organiza tion was held in Salisbury and this one will be the last under the present name as unification of all Methodist churches calls for changes in different organizations of the church. Airs. Tessier read a paper on the growth of inter-racial work. The Society is buying an elec tric stove for the church kitchen and two members are appoint ed each month to be responsible for the monthly payments. Airs. E. K. Cunningham and Afrs. Frank Smith had the month of April and turned in more than their quota from the sale of rooted flowers. Airs. Sloan and Airs. Keener, who has been' spending several weeks in Washington, D. C, returned to her home in Highlands Tuesday. On her return ahe stopped off in Atlanta to attend the graduation exercises of her daughter, Aliss Alary Keener, who graduated from the St. Joseph hospital. Misses Ruth Higgins and Leida Beshears returned to Greensboro Sunday where they are students at Woman's College of the Uni versity or North Carolina, after spending the week-end here with thejr parents.
