National Flag Day
Celebrated Friday
Friday is National Flag Day.
- In a proclamation Governor Hoey
said in part :
"The year 1940 should witness a
very general observance of Flag
Day. It should be remembered
that ' June the 14th is the anni
versary of the adoption by the
Continental'Congress in 1777 of the
Star.s and Stripes as the emblem
of the United States and with that
date began the history of our flag
as the symbol of our nationality.
"1 suggest special services and
programs in order to direct the
attention of our people to our pres
ent situation and to prepare us
for eventualities of the future.
Such exercises and observances
should result in giving fresh cour
age to our people to meet the con
ditions which may be imposed upon
us by reason of the necessity for
preparing to defend ourselves and
to preserve our civilization."

"North Carolina" Today
The second battleship to be

ADVERTISING
-A SERVICE FOR YOU
Advertising renders an important service by
bringing to you the show windows and price
tags of the nation. In the columns of this news
paper all through the year, you can DISCOVER
and CONSIDER the things you want to buy.
Thus you need not search through a hundred
shops or pay more than you should.
The rule of advertising is simple. The more
people know about the merit of a product, the
more people buy it. The greater the volume of
sales, the less it costs to manufacture. Savings
in producing mean either lower prices to the
consumer or an even greater value the next
time you buy. THIS SAVES YOU MONEY.
So advertising is more than a means for sell
ing goods its a service to YOU!
