West's Mill Mart Hurt In
Sawmill Accident
Weaver Carter, 60, West', Mill
sawmill operator, had his skull
fractured last Thursday when an
emory wheel at which he was
sharpening a saw broke, striking
him on the head. ,
. He was taken to Angel hospital
by Don ' Raby of Etna, who was
present, where his condition this .
week is reported improved.

Again For Annual
Hike July 20-21

sitions and come to the ole Tar
heel state", to camp at Vim Hook
Glade, hold meetings and explore
Cliffside Lake and hike o White
sides mountiain, on Saturday and
Sunday, June 20, 21.
The 'occasion of this gathering is
the annual meeting of fellow hik
ers of the Smoky Mountains Hik
ing Club, Carolina Mountain Club,
Balsam Mountain Hiking Club and
Georgia Appalachian Trail Club.
This four-club-get-together is an
annual affair which ' is held at
various locations .selected each
year either in Tennessee, North
Carolina or Georgia, bringing mem
bers from these and other states
all members of Appalachian Trail
Clubs and bound together by the
common delight in and love for
nature.
The meeting will begin with hikes
arid swims at Cliffside on Satur
day afternoon after arrival, follow
ed by supper around the camp fire.
An entertainment in the amphi
theater at Cliffside will he enjoyed
on Saturday evening, featuring
color films by recreational activities
in Nantahala Forest shown by
Charles Melichar, superintendent
of the forest,' talks and singing.
On Sunday the party will hike
up and cver Whiteside Mountain,
including going through "Betsie's
Squeeze."
Several- years . ago this large
group, numbering around forty
members and guests, hiked to
Standing Indian, and at nnother
time followed the Appalachian
Trail 'as 'it passes through Macon
county over Wayah Bald. This
year Leader Guy Fizzell will be
assisted by "Tarheel" Hyatt Good
128,533 Persons Visited
Smokies During June
A total of 128,533 persons visited
Great Smoky Mountains National
Park during June, 1940, and they
came in 39,203 vehicles. The visJ
itors were from, all 48 .states, the
District of Columbia, Hawaii, Can
ada, Mexico, Panama, Venezulea,
Cuba, and Chile. Fifty-three per
cent of the visitors were from oth
er than the local states of North
Carolina and Tennessee.
