S. Ftrest Service and the State of North Carolina cooperate on a Wildlife Management Area Wayah Creek states Charles M. Melichar, For est Supervisor, Naritahala National, Rorest. . ' Last Sunday ten happy sportsmen checked in with an average catch of over eight nice trout per per son. It has been this way for weeks until the names of Wayah Creek has come to spell success. Under the watchful care cf State Game Protector. George Crawford a large number of trout have been brou&ht up to legal size. This has required plenty of work, not only in preventing poaching out of sea son but protection of the fish front natural enemies. If you find a small steel trap set on top of a post, do not touch it for it is set for a Kingfisher bird. One of these destructive birds does not make his .home for long on Wayah Creek before he lights on the steel trap and tumbles to his death. Or if you find a cylinder of wire netting that looks .like a fly trap . immersed in the stream do not touch it for it is a water snake trap baited with' fish entrails or meat. All of these devices are placed there by the game protector to make better fishing for you. ' The two main forks of Wayah Creek that are proving most popu lar for men and women are Rough Fork and Camp Branch. From the time the reason opened in April over 1,000 legal size fish ,have been caught .here including several that measured 16 inches in length. Ac cording to, the fis.h stocking rec ords, there, are over 800 more fish waiting to be lured to the checking station before September 1 arrives and the closing of trout season. This means five more week-ends' until the close of the season. If the truth were known, the .high average catch per fisherman on Wayah Creek could possibly be attributed to. the fact that, the genial George Crawford sometimes includes a fishing lesson long with your permit if he sees that y.ou are no match for the wily trolt on Wayah Creek. However, there is one thing sure about- this fish story, and ' that is that there are plenty of trout being caught on Wayah Creek this year.
