HEAT RECORDS BROKEN The longest arid broadest ' heat wave of 1940 reaches a new crest as temperatures throughout the country soar, and many deaths are reported from heat exhaustion and drownings. Storms in this area re lieved the high temperature yes terday. 34 TOBACCO COMPANIES INDICTED Trie department of justice yes terday indicted 34 tobacco com panies including the "Big Four", Reynolds, Liggjett and Myers, Am erican and P. Lorillard companies of practices "which Jiave been deliberately designed to dominate and dictate terms" to growers and sellers of tobacco ' described as "harsh and oppressive." The charges have been denied already by sev eral companies. MILITARY TRAINING . The senate military committee has given its approval to com pulsory military training calling for registration of 42,000,000 men between 18 and 64 years. H Shop training that will emtio men for service in key industries for national defense began in Canton Monday with 12 students above 18 years enrolled. The school will con tinue 12 weeks. HIAWASSEE DAM COMPLETED Hiawaasee Dam on the Hiwassee river near Murphy, constructed by TVA, is completed after four years of building. The dam is 1,287 feet long, 307 feet high, arid re quires a total of 794,000 cubic yards of concrete in buildings. Carl Green Of Asheville Addresses Franklin Lions Carl Green, of Asheville was the guest speaker at the Lions Club last. Monday evening. Wesley Brown, president of the Asheville Lions was also a guest at the meeting and i . oduced the speak er. Lion Green gave the gathering an interesting talk on the purposes, aims and growth of Lions Inter national. The Clubs emphasize their character as .service clubs rather than business organizations, taking the Golden Rule for their motto. The clubs are interested in serving their communities in whatever makes for the welfare of all citizens. The Lions early be came especially identified and adopted as their major projects, work for the blind and tho.se of poor vision. Old people and school children are aided in the obtain ing treatment and glasses. Other projects cover a wide field of ac tivities. MACON ACCEPTS POSITION ,1N CHAPEL HILL Mrs. Helen Macon has accepted the position of critic teacher in the high school of Chapel Hill, and will take up her new duties early in' September. This promotion to one of the outstanding high schools of the state, in the position of general supervisor of teaching is well deserved by Mrs. Macon, who has taught English in the Franklin high school for some years and holds a high record in .scholarship and leadership with both students and teachers of Macon county. Many of her pupils have made fine records in their subsequent college work. Mrs. Macon's many friends are gratified that her work has received this recognition.
