The Otter Creek elementary and high school basketball teams split a double-header with Andrews last week, the Otter Creek elementary team vanquishing Andrews' elemen tary. 35-4, and Andrews high school taking revenge "for their younger brothers defeat by winning over the Otter Creek high boys by 28-14. This figure represents an in crease of 8,894,229, or 7.2 per cent, over the papulation of the United States in 1930- Census officials point out that tills increase is less than half that of any previous decade since the first census in 1790. If present trends continue, Di rector Lane predicted, the United Stales will . have a stationary or declining population in 30 or 40 years. He attributed the small in crease during the past decade to a falling birth rate and the virtual stoppage, of immigration. N. C Hm 12. Per cent Increase According to the : 1940 census, North Carolina's population is 3, 571,623, an increase of 12.7 per cent oVer the state's population in 1930. The increase gives North Carolina 1 1th . place among the states, ranked by population, in stead of 12th as formerly. The state was one of 12 whose popula tion increase was more than 250, 000 during the ten year period. The District of Columbia, with an increase of 42.7 per cent, grew faster during the past decade than any of the states. Fastest growing state was Florida with an increase of 29.2 per cent, followed by New Mexico with 25.6 per cent, and California with 21.7 per cent. Six states, five of which are lo cated in the dust bowl region of the middle west, showed a decline in population during 1930-40. In no previous decade have more than three states shown a decline in population. . ; Farmers Federation ' Pays Dividend A semi-annual dividend of three per cent payable Jnuary 1, 1941, to stockholders of record December 16, 1940. has been declared by the directors of the Farmers Federa tion, Inc. More than 4,500 stockholders in Western North Carolina wili share in this disbursement which is the Federation's 14th consecutive semi annual dividend. Checks will be mailed to the holders of preferred shares, while the majority of com mon stockholders will be paid in cash at the nearest Farmers Fed eration warehouse. The directors also announced a dividend of three per cent on par tial paid stock in the Federation. These shares have been accumu lated by means of the patronage dividend which for several years the Federation has distributed in stock to cash purchasers. The divi dend cm partial- paid stock will be paid in credits toward full stock shares which, when completed, will entitle the holders to regular cash dividends.
