CONLEY, PHONE 104 PTA NEXT MONDAY The PTA will hold , its regular meeting Monday at 3:30 p. m. with Mrs. Fred Slagle, president, presiding. The devotioas will be led by Rev. J. M. Stokes H, pastor of the Methodist church. Miss Helen Moore, of the high school faculty, will sing a solo accompanied by Miss Dorothy Plonk at the piano. The speaker will be Guy L. Houk, superintendent of schools. A large attendance is urged and the public is invited. MRS. CHARLES MELICHAR ENTERTAINS AT TEA Mrs. Charles Melichar. entertain ed at tea last Friday afternoon in honor of Mrs". Miza Crawford and her daughter, Mrs. Una C de . Urriolagoitia, of Ciud Obergon, Sonora, Mexico. ' Guests cailed through the after noon, many being old friends of Mrs. Urriolagoitia, who were de lighted to see her again after a long absence in residence in Mexi co where her husband is a promi nent physician in the province of Sonora. The hostess served delicious sandwiches and cakes with tea. RESIDENT OF MEXICO CHARMS GIRL SCOUTS The Franklin Girl Scouts sat enraptured for , an hour at their last meeting while Mrs. Una . C. de Urriolagoittia talked to them about Mexico. While they worked their guest told them in a charming way, all her own, about the strange land so near us to the south, and yet so different in manners, language and customs. The girls learned much that- was new and interest ing about the people, the history and the life today, of this country that is our neighbor below the Rio (irande. Corbin, o,f Franklin Route 4, have an nounced the marriage of their ' daughter, Miss Margaret Elizabeth Corbin to James Elbridge Pender grass, of Franklin Route 1. The wedding ceremony was sol emnized in Clarksville, Ga., on Monday, December 23, 1940. The bride was attired in a teal blue , costume and wore beige ac cessories. ."-"".'"'. Mr. Pendergrass is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Pendergrass, of Franklin Route 1. He recently redurned from Caldwell, Idaho, and has accepted a position with the Burrell Motor Company here., Mr. and Mrs. Pendergrass were accompanied to Clarksville by Miss Lenwood Corbin and Floyd Os bourne, of Franklin. The young couple are residing with the groom's parents at present. BAPTIST WOMEN WILL. MEET THURSDAY The . Woman's Missionary Socie ties' of the Franklin Baptist church will meet on Thursday afternoon, January 23, at 3 o'clock for their regular meetings. Circle No. 1 will meet at the-home of Mrs. T. D. Bryson, Jr., on Harrison avenue, Circle No. 2 will meet with Mrs. Ralph Parrish on Bidwell street while Circle No. 3 will meet with Mrs. Manson Stiles at her home on Bidwell street. All members are urged to attend. THOMPSON-ARRENDALE Announcements have been re ceived here of the marriage of Mis.s Catherine Ann Thompson, of Sylvania, Ga., to Joe Arrendale of Tiger, Ga. Mr. Arrendale, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John V. Arrendale, who were former residents of Franklin, was connected with Angel hospital here last summer. U. D. C MEETING HELD MONDAY The January, meeting of the United Daughters of Confederacy was held at the home of Mrs. Thomas Fagg in the Carolina apartments on Monday afternoon, with Mrs. George Slagle and Mr. J. R. Ray associate hostesses. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Herbert E. Church, presi dent. Plans were discussed and made for the silver tea which is to be held on Monday afternoon, January 27, from 3 toA 5 o'clock at the home of Mrs. Church in the Orlando apartments. Mrs. George Slagle and Mrs. J. R.,,Ray were appointed to make the program and year books for 1941. The February meeting is schedul ed to meet with Mrs. A. B. Slagle and Miss Elizabeth Slagle. At the conclusion of the meet ing the hostesses served a delicious salad and sweet course.' Those attending were Mrs. J. Ward Long, Mrs. Herbert E. Church, Mrs. T. J. Johnston, Mrs. Lon Campbell, .Mrs. Zeb W. Con ley, Mrs. John Slagle and Mrs. Lester Conlejr. Miss Evelyn Hope Daniels, .of New York, who came to Franklin for the funeral of her. uncle, Julius S. Robinson, is .spending several days in Franklin the guest of her ' cousins, Mrs. J. S. Sloan and Mrs. Reba Tcssier. Rev. and Mrs, C. F. Rogers and Mrs. Derald Ashe spent Wednes day in Bryson City with friends. Mrs. John O. Wall, the former Miss Margaret Cozad, who under went a serious operation in Elb erton, Ga., Tuesday,1 was reported to be doing nicely Wednesday. Miss Alma Kee, district super vising nurse, of -Waynesville, spent several day.s in Macon county health department this week. Mr. and Mrs. John H. Thomas spent the week-end in Dillard, Ga., visiting their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Bead Dillard. Mrs. A. F. Clouse and son, Warren, "of Sylva, visited Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dean here Sunday. Mr. arid J Mrs. George Gibson were called to Webster the first of the week because of the death of Mrs. Gibson's father, T. B. Cowan. ' Mrs. W. T. Moore, who under went an Operation at Angel i hos pital on Tuesday morning, is re ported to be doing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Griffin have moved to Franklin and are living in the Carolina Apartments. Mr. Griffin is the manager of ihe Crop and Feed Loan .of f ice of the Farm Credit Administration re cently set up in the oourthpu.se. Mrs. A. Rufus Morgan has re turned home after a visit to her son, A. Rufus Morgan, Jr., in Charleston, S. C. Dr. F. T, Smith, who has been confined to his home with a se vere cold, is reported much bettei. Miss . Laura Stillwell, of Bryson City, "is. visiting ' her sister, Mrs., John F. Cunningham and Mr. Cunningham at their home on Franklin Route 1. Mrs. Emma Huskin, who has been visiting her son, Frank Hus kin and Mrs. Huskin at their home in West Asheville, has returned to her home on Harrison avenue. Mrs. H. O. Cozad and daughter, Mrs. C. S. Brown, Jr., are spending this week in Elberton, Ga., with their daughter and sister, Mrs. John O. Wall and Mr. Wall. Mrs. Jack Sherrill, Sr., is spend ing this week in Asheville with her daughter, Miss Fannie Mae Sherrill who is employed there. She will also visit friends in, Mur phy while there. Sam McCall, of the Gneiss com munity, is leaving the latter part of this week for Fort Bragg where he has employment. Mrs. John S. Wells, of Cornelia Ga., was here on business Tues day and visiting friends. Ellis V. Hurst, of Outlook, Mont., is visiting his sister, Miss Nettie Hurst at "Woodhunst Farm" and other, relatives in Macon county. Mr. Hurst is owner of a large cattle ranch near Daleview, Mont. Mrs. Ed Whitaker spent the first of the week in Bryson City vis iting her parents,; Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Morris. The bookmobile will make its regular schedule beginning Mon day, January 20, and continuing through the week as usual, it has been announced i by Mrs. Frank I. Murray, bookmobile librarian. Mrs. Derald Ashe' has returned from Hazelwood where she spent the week-end visiting her sister,, Mrs. Roy Robinson. Mrs. Maude Hunter, of Bryson City visited Mrs. R. M. Waldroop at her home on Harrison avenue Sunday. Mrs. A. B. Slagle, who has been a patient in Angel hospital for several days has returned to her home much improved. Mrs. Mamie Reynold is visiting her son, Carroll Reynolds, and Mrs. Reynolds at their home at West's Mill this week. Gneiss By MRS. F. E. MASHBURN WOMAN'S CLUB MEETING The Woman's Club meeting conducted by . Mrs. Frorence Sher rill at the home of Mrs. W; A. Keener on January 7, was well attended. It was a business meet ing mostly, reviewing the past and planning for the future. The Walnut Creek road isn't perfect, therefore Mrs. Sherrill got Hom er Moss, Highlands mail carrier to bring her and other club mem bers up the mountain in his' car. Therefore she was able to keep her appointment, a thing we greatly appreciate. Next month's club meeting is to be held at the Walnut Creek school house. This time Mr. Men denhall, county farm agent, is going to show those present how to construct a : cheap, home-made brooder.- fives on ' Walnut Creek Sunday. ' Billie and Frances Keener spent Sunday with their ' grandmother, Mrs. Carrie Henry on Ellijay. Gilbert Mashburn accompanied them. Mr,' and Mrs.. Zeb Moss of Franklin, and Mrs. Ollie Stuard of Jackson county, were visiting on Walnut Creek Saturday. Rev.' Frank Holland, of Culla saja, preached at Walnut Creek Sunday a. m. He plans to come back the fourth Sunday to preach. Edward Mashburn, an enrolled of Camp Baker, Baker, Ore., is radio operator there. Emory Mashburn, an enrollee of Otto camp is spending' his leave of absence with his people. Ennis Mashburn of Ft. Moultrie is visiting home folk. Bert Tilson's health is critical. The children of Will Hedden are recovering from measles. There are two cases of measles at Jack Berry's, and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Leopard's children are confined at home with meas les. ' ' ' ;" . Howard Keener, who has a job on the Nantahala danv spent the week-end with his family. Mrs. Josephine Leopard has gone to Shookville to take , care of Mrs. Mattie Moss, who is poor health. Alfred Leopard went to Black Mountain Sanatorium Sunday to see his: sister, Mrs. Minnie Rog ers, who is a patient there.
