National defense, state officers'
salaries and auto license tags were
key subjects on the first week's
legislative agenda.
Raising four salaries, and ap
propriating $2,000 for the Gover
nor's inauguration, the General As
sembly at the very beginning struck
what may prove to be the key
note iiof. the 1941 session. The sal
ary increase, designed . to equalize
the pay of Constitutional officials
with others increased in 1937, wilt
give a 10 per cent raise to the Sec
retary of State, State Auditor,
State Treasurer and Superintendent
of Public Instruction. Thfe treasure
was passed the first day.
National Defense (
..Two of the ten bills introduced
concerned national defense. One,
passed without a dissenting voice,
was a resolution approving Presi
dent Roys'evelt',s defense and aid-to-Britain
policies. A , copy of. the
Resolution was forwarded to the
President. The other measure, pre
sented by Representative LeGrand
of New Hanover, is designed to
curb "subversive activities" by mak
ing unlawful the advising or teach
ing of overthrow of gcA-ernment by
force, with specific "prohibition.., 'of
the use of .State buildings for such
purpose. This bill was ' sent to
committee.

guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Guffey
for dinner and later visited Pano
rama Courts.

Negro Boy Tried
For Forgery
Raleigh Dawkins, 13 year old
negro boyf charged with forging
the name of Dr. Furman Angel
to checks and cashing same, was
brought before Harley Cabe, juve
nile court judge, Thursday after
noon. The boy acknowledged he
had cashed four checks aggregat
ing $3074, at the ration tilling
station, Barnard's store and at the
Bank of Franklin, but denied that
he had sinned Dr. Furman's name
or his own name. He gave the
names of two boys who, he saiu,
signed the checks. Two checks
were placed in evidence. ,
