Former Macon Man Seriously Burned News has come from Pine Bluff, Wyo., that Sheirl Brown, 20, grand son of Mrs. Charles A. Lowery of Franklin, nearly lost his life from attempting to rescue a young man from burning. A fire in a potato ccller jen trapped three men, one of whom, Elroy Chavez, 23, did not escape. Young Brown, who had made his escape with the other two men re-entered the flaming cellar in an unsuccessful attempt ot rescue the unfortunate man. He managed to reach the outside again from the blazing inferno, with his cloth ing enveloping him like a blazing torch. His father, Walter Brown, was badly burned in an attempt to extinguish the flames from his son and the other men who escap ed. His life was despaired of for several hours. The Browns' are well known here where Mr. Brown has visited his mother-in-law following the death of his wife, the former Miss Hel en Allison, a daughter of Mrs. Lowery. She and his three sisters left here five years ago to make their home with their father in Wyoming. Robert Saunders Has Auto Accident En route to the funeral of his brother, C. T. NOLEN, Mgr. Palmer St. , Franklin M'KEE REPLIES TO HIS CRITICS Road Funds r or Jackson Macon And Buncombe Counties Compared Replying to a speech made by Senator Howell in the' state senate. February 27, and commenting on figures on highway expenditures in the tenth , division E. L. McKee, of Sylva, tenth division highway commissioner, has issued a .state men tment denying that his home county of Jackson has received more than its share of ' highway funds. Mr. McKw's statement adds that "the interests of Buncombe have heen taken care of directly and indirectly with the utmom fairness and consideration.'' Buncombe County Mr. McKee showed the ' basis upon which funds were allocated to support his statement, on the basis of needs and the greatest benefit to the division as a whole of federal aid funds. He showed that Jackson was allocated $438, 000 of these funds while $1,496,000 went to construct such projects as the Asheville to Parkway highway and other projects, as well as widening and surfacing in many directions out of Asheville. 1 The .section from Cashiers to the South Carolina line construct i ed With secondary -funds and WPA and prison labor, and the shortest route from points in South Caro lina and Georgia to the Great Smokies, has . been badly needed for 20 years, he .explained. DilUbciro, Grade Crossing "The grade elimination bridge near Dillsboro, on U. S. 19 and 23, was neither suggested nor re quested by me. This project . . . was entirely paid for by the gov ernment and railway company, with the exception of comparatively Asnevuie to. Atlanta- route, was condemned by highway engineers. It has since washed out. I had to transfer money from other bridge projects Osincc also washed out) to construct the present bridge. The location was made by the bridge department and the United States bureau of public roads. Macon County "The . chairman of the .State Highway and Public Works com mission requested me to allot the money for the connection between Highlands and the Georgia state line, to carry out an agreement previously made with the Georgia Highway commission. The North Carolina commission built one mile of the 14-mile, road from High-: lands to Dilfaxd, Ga., to connect our system with this road at the N'antahala Forest boundary. The forest service spent an estimated $200,000. Then the Nantahala forest authorities requested us to com plete the surface treatment of the North Carolina- section of the road. This we did, at a cost of $120,000, all of which was paid for with forestry service funds. This com pletes a gap of another route from Atlanta to Asheville. with approximately the same distance as U. S. No; 23. On the whole it is a better road as to grades, and alignments, allowing greater speed ; and saving time between Asheville Church Services Sunday, March 23 FRANKLIN METHODIST CHURCH , Ry.
