Let not your heart be troubled, -meither kt.it be afraid. St. John 14:27. 1 !.. Maligned, persecuted; deserted, flogged, crucified, and yet, in the midst of it and facing the worst, He ooud sit calmly in the upper room with His disciples and have ,so much peace that He could give it -away.''' , .. Even so we must win our peace. Selected. Good Friday and Easter S we approach the Easter season this fateful year, the joy of Easter is overshadowed by the blackness of the picture that conies to us from bat tlefields. The 'darkness that was over the face of the earth' at the time of Christ's crucifixion sym bolizes the awful tragedy that is being enacted in the world today, The Gethsemane that One met through the forces of hate and violence is today literally being faced by, millions. Like the multitudes that stood afar off and gazed at the victims of the three crosses on Golgotha, so, on this Good Friday we gaze with horror on a world writhing ill agony. Something of the hopelessness that possessed the disciples of Jesus is overwhelming some of his fol lowers today. The acid. test is applied to the reality of our religion. The Spirit of Easter is one of hope and reawak ening even to the thoughtless. Many celebrate East er with gladness who are willing to forget that there was a Good Friday. But this year there is a dread compulsion upon all to ' remember. 'Chris tians can carry .the message of the Risen Christ only if they are willing to suffer, with Him, for the sins of the world that make the present happenings possible. For it is only the truth of the Resurrec tion that1 will bring, back sanity and hope to a war torn world. Today, as truly as two thousand years ago, it is only the crucified and Risen Christ that can save the world. A Good Citizen Passes CVERYONE 'who knew Emory S. Hunnicutt counted him a friend. For he possessed that kindliness and gentleness that .marks a man who loves his neighbor as himself. Of him a long-time friend said yesterday, "Mr, Hunnicutt never spoke ill of anybody, and always his thoughts were for the welfare. of everybody in those things that min istered to the benefit of all the people." Mr. Hunnicutt never lost his vision. In fact, he was regarded by many practical people as a vision ary; But he lived to see many of his dreams come true. He was among the first to be interested, in the development of the Franklin electric power plant. His work of promoting this progressive enterprise was recognized by his; associates by naming Lake Emory for him. In those early days he expressed the hope that the day would come when every farm could have electric lights. ,He was always deeply interested in the development of his town from the standpoint of the welfare of all. The social service to the underprivileged, the aged and to chil dren that is now a reality was another of his dreams. . Many will carry gratefully the remembrance of this kindlv man. Spring Cleaning THE mayor's proclamation reminds all good citi- zens that it is time to clean up and fix up. The improvements to the streets and the many new buildings in progress have added much to the appearance of our town i during the past year. Many homes have been improved inside and out. The same spirit of cooperation that has been ex pressed to the town authorities by the Chamber of Commerce and the Garden Club will no doubt be extended by all service clubs, organizations and in dividuals. Franklin expects a good tourist season this year. Visitors who come to enjoy the beautiful scenery will be tempted to tarry in a clean, attractive town. Fishin Time THE fishing schedule .announced in this issue is . another reminder that Spring and fishin' time vare here. We hope that many fathers will take this opportunity to get better acquainted with their children. Fishing is a wonderful occupation, too, to help the fisherman get better acquainted with himself. We , are passing on to the followers of Izaak Walton this skit from the Kentucky Sports man: "Hain't got no pip an' hain't got no flu ! All I need is a day er two far away from the haunts of men, where I kin be a boy again. Winter is an awful drain on a feller's fishin' brain. Makes a feller sorter pine for th' wet tin' of a line; drefful weary here erbout, when he' thinks of jumpin' trout"; seems as tho' this very thing came ter me THE OLD HOME TOWN By STANLEY VraMIT r-iu"niar, , fti I I I 1 CJ pawSh re a asAO-r, 1 lrip?
