Harry S. Higgins' music class in

afternoon.
The Cowee school rhythni band,

rection of Mrs. Zeb Moss, teacher,
took an active part on - the pro
glram, with Zena Pearl Rickman
as leader. Ruth West and Freida

come by Mrs. Dan Tompkins for
the local chapter, H, Gibson, mayor
of Sylva and Dan Tompkins, for
the American kegion. The response
was made by Mrs, Preston Thomas
of ' 'Asheville. ' The address of the
day was delivered by Mrs. R. O.
Everett, of Durham, djvision pres
ident, who was. introduced by Mrs.
L. E. Fisher, Asheville,- state pres
ident. Luncheon was served at the
community house.

FORMER MACON PASTOR
CELEBRATES 70th YEAR
The Kev. W. 1. Hughes, who has
served the Franklin and Macon
circuits, and ' who now makes his
home at Rutherford College, cele
brated his 70th birthday last Sun
day. A large number of friends
united with the ministerial .associa
tion of Lovelady 'township, Burke
county, in the celebration. After
dinner, the regular business of lhe
association was transacted.

tive preaching and is teacher of

CONFEDERACY MEET
At the 18th annual meeting of
the first district of the United
Daughters of. the Confederacy in
Sylva last Tuesday, Mrs. Herbert
E. Church, president of the Frank
lin chapter, was elected vice-director
of the district. Mrs. L. A.
Cossett of . Hendersomville was
elected director. The district in
cludes the following chapters:
Andrews, Asheville, Black Moun
tain, Brevard, Dillsboro, Franklin,
Hendersonville, Old Fort, Sylva
and Waynesville. Miss Anne
Wilson; district director, presided

Mr. and Mrs. James Ballard and
nephew, Dion Foot, have arrived
in Franklin where Mr. Ballard is
connected with the forest .service.
They came here from Montana.
Mr. Ballard has been working out
of the Asheville office of U. S.
Forest Service.
Mrs. Ray . N. Moses and three
children, of Cartoogechaye, will
leave Saturday for Rutherfordton
where they will spent several days
with Mrs. Moses' sister, Mrs. Gene
Tanner. They will also visit Mrs.
Moses' mother, Mrs. Ida Jane
Hairr in Clinton while gone.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Skagg and
daughter, Betty Lou, of Walhalla,

home in Asheville, after spending

been ill for several days was re
ported Wednesday to be some
what improved.
Mrs. W. A. Tippett, of Frank
lin Route 4, is spending a week
with her daughter, Mrs. Frank
Tallent amd Mr. Tallent at their
home on the Georgia road. .
Mr. and Mrs. Horace Cunning
ham spent the week-end with his
uncle, James W. Cunningham and
family hear Franklin.
Bob , Tallent and Charlie Dills
returned to Brevard Monday where
they have employment, after spend
ing the week-end in Franklin with
relatives and friends.
Mrs. Eloise G. Franks, county
sunrrintendent of nublic Welfare,
attended the annual convention of
mother, Mrs. J. T. Cozening at
her home on Cartoogechaye.
J. B. Higdon has returned to his
home in Atlanta, after being here
during the illness and death of his
mother, Mrs. Margaret Higdon.
Mrs. John Mallonee, of Almond,
Swain county, visited relatives and
friends here Monday.
Jack Ramey, of - Enka, is spend
ing several days with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Ramey at their
home at Riverside.

ed from Greensboro where she
spent several weeks with her
daughter, Mrs. L. B. Hayes and
Mr. Hayes.
Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Hearn and
son, Eric, of Salisbury, spent the
first of the week here with Mrs.
Hearn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.
L. Barnard.

Entertained
The elementary teachers of the
Franklin school t were entertained
last Thursday-by Mrs. Lester Hen
derson at her home on Forest
avenue. Decorations were spring
flowers. Miss Amy ' Henderson as
sisted in entertaining. .
Refreshments were served, after
which discussions were in order
concerning' the Book Club of ( the
teachers. Mrs. Pearl Hunter was,
elected president..
The books of the club are read
and passed along until each mem
'ber has had a chance to read all
books.

in Angel hospital was reported
Thursday to be improving nicely.
Mrs. Jera Shope is a patient in
Angel hospital suffering from in
juries received in a' fall last week.
J. M. Morgan, of West's Mill,
who underwent a gall bladder oper
ation at Angel hospital Tuesday, is
reported to be getting along nicely.
Mrs. W. M. Smart has returned
from Chapel Hill where she spent
several weeks with her husband
and son, who are working there.
Mrs. H. G. Crisp, of Highlands,
who underwent a very serious op
eration at Angel hospital, was re
ported by hospital attendants to
be very satisfactory.
Mr. Bailey of the Selective
Service Board in Raleigh visited
the local draft board this week
for a conference with the local
board. He congratulated the board
upon the efficient manner in which
the records were kept by the clerk,

January, have moved back to the

North Carolina Chicken Pie
Dress and singe a fowl. Put in
a saucepan with boiling water to
cover, add a sliced carrot, one stalk
celery, one sprig parsley and one
fliced onion. Bring to the boiling
point, cover and simmer until the
fowl is tender allowing about 30
minutes to pound. When half done
season with salt and pepper. Line
a shallow baking dish with pastry,
then a layer of cup-up boned
chicken, " than a layer of pastry.
Boil chicken stock dow.n to 3 cups,
strain and skim off most of the
fat. Mix 4 tablespoons flour to a
smooth paste with cold water and
add to the stock. Bring to the
boiling point, stirring constantly
and add to the chicken in baking
dish, put in oven and cook until
bottom crust is nearly done. Then
add remainder of stock, if any,
and cover 'with pastry, cook slow
and top crust is brown. Serve im
mediately. ,
