Adult Classes Offer Many A Chance To Progress Today the program is carried out as a WPA project. Mrs. Leona P. Duncan has .served as a teach er and as head teacher, with many other able, and devoted teachers who have taught classes in every nook and cranny of the county The following figures will give some idea of progress up from illiteracy in Macon county. According to the 1930 census figures ' Macon County ,had 585 absolute illiterates, or people who were honest enough to admit they did not know how to sign their names, plus many others whose pride kept them from making the admission to the census taker. Statistical reports in the District office show that beween 1935 and 1938, .953 absolute illiterates were taught by the teachers working in Macon County. In 1939, 1940, 1941 we can add these additional num bers to the list taught, 867, mak ing a total of 1820. NYA Program In Macon County Trains Many Youths The program began in this county in a limited way late in 1935. Since-its inception, aside from furnishing needed employment the payroll has amounted to over 60, 000 in this county. It has increas ed to give work to about 200 needy young people for their support or for student aid. Projects of a useful nature are instituted that pay a per hour wage. Assisting WPA lunch rooms, doing, clerical work for government agencies, road build ing, carpentry and weaving are some of the activities. Mrs. Mar garet Ordway is supervisor of NYA in Macon county. For two years weaving centers were maintained at Kyle and Franklin. ' Community Center Built A log building of 30 by 70 feet judged the finest log building, by NYA in the state was built un der the sponsorship, of the color ed people of the county for a community center. It serves also to supplement inadequate school facilities as a lunch room, as well a auditorium and indoor basket ball. The May community center has been built under the sponsorship of the People of Otter Creek, and the people of lotla are spon soring a center now under con struction. Residents of Horse Cove and Kyle 'are making efforts to spon sor similiar buildings.
