Corlnn ar rived last week .from Woman's College of the University of North Carolina to spend the summer. She has been an honor pupil during her two years at college. Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, 84 recalls bit of history that she related to the correspondent. She said, "In 1867 Mr. Alex Bell came to this country from Tennessee and start ed the first Sunday school at El lijay and then came to Cullasaja and started one at Pine Grove and gave us children our lessons in an old Blue Back Spelling-book, and just a few of the older people read in the Testament.. I was just S years old and I will be 84 on the 5th of June. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Russell and three children are visiting Mr. Russell's mother, Mrs. C. R. Rus sell.. The Walnut Creek road was scraped the last week in May. Mesdame. Gertrude Straine, Amanda Gregory, Elsie Stiwinter, and Fay Mashburn attended, the district meeting of Home Demon sration Clubs at; Hayesville Fri day. ' Emory Mashburn drove the car and all enjoyed the magnifi cent scenery along Highway No, 64. James and Richard Mashburn spent I the, weekend with their grandfather, D. J. Moses on Elli jay. ' Mr. and 'Mrs. Jerry Holland and family have just' moved from O. C Corfcin's farm to their, son's farm, which he has recently pur-' chased from "Uncle" Matt Bryson. Miss Gertrude Holland, who has been . working in Gastonia, is home for a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Holland. W. H. Rogers of Highlands is visiting his sister, Mrs. Jane Til- J son and family. . ' Bunyan Miller is in poor health. ' Furman Peek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Peek, who has been suffering with rheumatism, recent ly underwent a tonsil operation in Angel hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Abernathy of Judson, Mrs. Edna Coffey of Bry son City, Frank Abernathy and children, Patricia and Frank, Jr. of Sylva were visiting relatives on Walnut Creek Sunday. While on Led ford Branch they were served home made light bread and white locust honey which they consider ed a "treat". Miss Anna Lee Mashburn, who spent, the past year with Mrs. W. H. Cobb in Highlands and attend ed high school there, is spending a few days at home with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Mash burn. She plans to return to High lands to work for Mrs. Cobb. Lewis Moses of El i jay has gone to Detroit, 'Mich, to work on a Defense project Mrs. Jenette Moses Daily of FJ Ccntro, Calif, will be home from the California legislature is June. She is a native of Macon county, having gone to California when just a young woman. Mrs. Daily has worked her way up and is now representing one of the largest and wealthiest counties of California. Cartoogechaye Merritt Beck returned last week from Cleveland, Tenn,, where he spent', two weeks with his father who is seriously ill. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Southard and family of Sylvia visited their par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Southards last Sunday. Alex, Jr., remained here to visit relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Freeman Hastine and. son. Glean, spent Sunday ' with Mr. and Mrs. Edd Battles. Mr. ' and Mrs. Lester Southard and Dorothy spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Southard. Mr. and Mrs. Wynne Rhodes of Glenville visited relatives last week. . Mrs. Elijah Grant and son, Lee, of Franklin are visiting her par ents Mr. and frs. Fred Conley. Misses Blanche and Byrda Nell Southard of Brevard spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Southard.
